“Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14

God doesn’t measure potential by how much you have compared to others. In the story of the talents in Matthew, He praised the servants who used what they were given. He was angry, however, with the one who had only one talent and buried it, hiding the gift God had placed in him. God isn’t impressed with comparison; He is grieved when we fail to maximize what He has already given us. Your life, your gift, your talent—no matter how small it seems—matters to God.

Don’t compare yourself to someone else. God calls you to be the best version of yourself, not a copy of someone else.

So, how do you reach your potential?

    1. Be yourself, then be all you can be.

You can never reach your potential pretending to be someone else.

Stop scanning others, stop comparing, and focus on what God has called you to do. Believe in your gifts, your talents, your calling.

    2. Keep growing. Oliver Holmes once said, “Man’s mind, once it is stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimensions.” Growth stretches us. Your mind is like a parachute—it only works when it’s open. Reading, learning, and stepping into new experiences expand your potential. Even as a pastor, I make time to learn from others, to read books I wouldn’t naturally choose, to challenge myself to grow. Growth forces you to reach higher and deeper than you’ve ever imagined.

    3. Accept the pressure of the moment. Potential rarely develops without pressure. Abraham Lincoln had to learn military strategy in the middle of the Civil War because he was forced to step into a position of responsibility. Pressure stretches your thinking, sharpens your abilities, and forces you to rely on God. If you’re avoiding pressure, you’re avoiding potential.

You were created to win, not to settle for mediocrity. Life may be difficult, but God’s call on your life demands that you rise. Use what He has given, stretch yourself daily, and embrace the pressures that refine you. Your potential is not just for you—it is a legacy for others, a reflection of God’s glory in your life.

Prayer: Lord, help me to embrace the gifts You’ve given me. Remove comparison from my heart and teach me to walk in my unique potential. Stretch my mind, expand my faith, and give me courage to face the pressures You place before me. May my life glorify You and inspire others to reach their God-given potential. Amen.
