2026 is an election year, and the midterms are already starting to dominate the headlines. As states and candidates prepare, many are looking to the Supreme Court. The high court is poised to decide on the Voting Rights Act and potentially reshape elections for years to come.

Let the IFA community know how to pray for you.

    From The Hill:

Election experts and politicians alike are bracing for the Supreme Court to weigh in on Louisiana v. Callais, a case centered around the Bayou State’s congressional map that could decide the fate of the Voting Rights Act.

When the high court heard oral arguments in October, the conservative majority raised concerns that states such as Louisiana were going too far in drawing majority-minority districts to comply with protections in the 1965 law, signaling they could move to limit the use of race in redistricting.

    …

If the court curtails Section 2, which protects against racial discrimination in voting procedures, it could give Republican states in the South virtual free rein to redraw their congressional and legislative lines as a national redistricting fight rages on.

Assuming the court curtails Section 2, it’s unclear whether states would be able to implement changes before the midterms. Louisiana, for example, as already committed to using its existing districts. However, this ruling could have drastic implications in 2028 and beyond.

Louisiana v. Callais isn’t the only case that could impact our elections. For example, in NRSC v. FEC, Republicans, including then-Senator JD Vance, sued the Federal Elections Commission over its caps on coordinated spending, arguing that such caps violate free speech. Even a late decision in this case could still impact the elections as candidates and parties scramble ahead of November.

Additionally, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear Watson v. RNC early this year. In this case, Republicans are pushing to eliminate Mississippi’s grace period that allows ballots to be counted up to 5 days after Election Day. And, as a result of the case, Ohio has already suspended its own grace period, fearing that a ruling against Mississippi’s grace period would throw the Buckeye state’s elections into chaos. If the Supreme Court rules quickly enough, this case could end up making our midterms much more secure.

Lastly, Bost v. Illinois State Board of Elections also concerns mail-in voting, though the case itself is more about legal standing. Representative Mike Bost and two other electors are appealing a lower court ruling that found they did not have the right to challenge Illinois’ ballot grace period. If the high court rules in favor of the Representative, it would open the floodgates, allowing more pivotal cases like Bost’s to appear before courts ahead of Election Day.

With all these cases before the Supreme Court, it’s clear we need to pray. Let’s pray for wisdom for every justice!
