    Becoming One Through Prayer

“In the days of His flesh, He offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the One who was able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverent submission.” Hebrews 5:7 (NIV)

One of the most humbling truths in all of Scripture is that Jesus prayed. He did not just teach about prayer. He did not simply affirm its importance. He lived it. The Son of God depended on prayer to remain one with the Father.

Paul takes the pattern we see in Genesis and applies it to Christ and His church. Oneness with God is not achieved through effort or discipline alone. It is formed in prayer. Prayer is not first about solving a dilemma. Prayer is about alignment. It is about becoming one with the Father.

That raises a sobering question. If Jesus had to pray, how much more do you and I need to pray?

Luke’s Gospel highlights this more than any other. Over and over, Luke shows us Jesus withdrawing to pray. Luke records at least seven distinct moments where Jesus prayed, often before pivotal seasons. At His baptism, while He was praying, heaven opened. The Spirit descended. Direction was released. Prayer marked the beginning of His public obedience to the will of the Father.

Hebrews tells us something even deeper. Jesus prayed with strong crying and tears. He prayed in anguish. He prayed in surrender. He prayed when obedience was costly. Scripture says that through those prayers, He learned obedience, and He became something He had not been before. Prayer shapes us, forms us, and matures us.

The suffering did not define Him. Prayer did. The betrayal did not break Him. Prayer carried Him. The pressure did not disqualify Him. Prayer refined Him. There are seasons when prayer is quiet and restful. But there are also seasons when prayer is travailing. Those moments are not failures of faith. They are part of becoming. When pain is matched with prayer, God uses it to mold you into who He has called you to be.

Jesus survived because He prayed. And you will too. Prayer is not how you escape the process. Prayer is how God uses the process to make you become who you are destined to be.

Prayer: Father, teach me to pray not only when life is calm, but especially when it is heavy. Shape me in the secret place. Align my heart with Yours. Use every season, even the painful ones, to help me become all You have called me to be. In Jesus’ name, amen.
