The Power of What Is Done in Secret

“But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.” Matthew 6:6 (NKJV)

Jesus teaches us something profound in Matthew 6. He assumes certain things about a believer. He does not say if you give, if you pray, or if you fast. He says when. When you give. When you pray. When you fast. These are not optional disciplines for a New Testament believer. They are expected parts of a living, growing faith.

Jesus also makes a clear distinction between public and private devotion. Throughout Scripture, prayer gatherings, corporate fasts, and public giving were common and powerful. God often moved when the whole community came together. Yet here in Matthew 6, Jesus intentionally turns our attention inward. He speaks directly to what happens when no one is watching.

He warns us not to do spiritual things to be seen by people. When giving is done for applause, the applause becomes the reward. When prayer is done for recognition, recognition is all you get. But when something is done quietly, sincerely, and for God alone, Jesus says the Father sees it and rewards it openly. Three times He repeats the promise. Giving in secret. Prayer in secret. Fasting in secret. And every time, the same assurance follows. Your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

That word openly matters. God is not embarrassed to bless obedience. He is not subtle about honoring surrendered lives. The fruit of private devotion eventually becomes visible. Peace shows up. Authority shows up. Breakthrough shows up. Others may not know what you did in secret, but they will see what God does in response.

Jesus also teaches that these three disciplines work together. Prayer opens communication with God. Giving aligns the heart with heaven. Fasting humbles the flesh and sharpens spiritual sensitivity. When prayer stands alone, there is reward. When prayer and giving come together, there is greater return. But when prayer, giving, and fasting are bound together, Scripture points us toward a fullness that cannot easily be broken.

There are battles that prayer alone will not touch. Jesus said some things only move through prayer and fasting, Matthew 17:21 (NKJV). There are breakthroughs waiting on believers who are willing to offer God something different in order to receive something different. What you do quietly with God has the power to change your year. What you surrender in secret can reshape your future. Heaven always responds to humble obedience.

Prayer: Father, teach me to value what is done in secret. Help me to pray faithfully, give generously, and fast obediently. I want a life that pleases You when no one else is watching. Let the fruit of my obedience bring glory to You. Amen.
