When I was first going through my autoimmune illness, I experienced immense doubt in God. I doubted His goodness, protection, and love. How could a good God allow us to experience such pain, trouble, and heartache? Questions such as this swirled around my head to the point that I turned away from God. I was still reading my Bible and doing all the “Christian” things, but I was not truly having a relationship with God.

During seasons of doubt, we tend to drift away from God. Whenever we are facing a season of doubt, we need to challenge ourselves to turn to God. Even if we are questioning Him, we are still talking to Him. Talk to Him in prayer, pour out your heart to Him, and get to the root of your pain. None of your questions is too much for God.

As you are walking through this season of doubt, hold on to these 7 biblical truths.

    1.  God is with You (Isaiah 41:10)

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10).

What are you doubtful of? Is it knowing that God is with you? If a person has gone through a traumatic experience, such as abandonment, it can be tough to know that God is with them. However, we must rely on the trust that He will never leave us, nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).

God is with you; He will strengthen you, help you, and uphold you with His righteous right hand. How does this make you feel? Take a breather and sit in God’s presence. Allow His love to cover the broken pieces of your heart.

    2. God Walks with Us Through the Hills and the Valleys (Psalm 23:1-6)

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4).

My darkest valley was the aftermath of my mom’s death. Nothing has been the same since her passing. I feel afraid, alone, and doubtful. God has graciously met me where I am. He didn’t tell me to work on my trust and then return to Him. Instead, He accepted me as I was—doubts, fears, insecurities, and all. He will also accept you, so do not fear turning to Him.

Rest in the peace that God is with you. Even if you don’t feel Him, He is still with you. What valley are you going through today? Perhaps you are going through the valley of the shadow of death. Go to the Lord with your doubts and challenge yourself to rest in His presence.

    3. God is Good (Psalm 100:1-5)

“For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations” (Psalm 100:5).

During times of immense doubt, it can be difficult for us to believe that God is good. Normalize this thought and let it go without passing judgment on it. Talk to God about your doubts. Pour them out to Him (1 Peter 5:7). Allow His peace to wash over you (Philippians 4:6-7).

Psalm 100:5 reminds us that the Lord is good, and His love and faithfulness endure forever. Whenever we are doubtful of God’s goodness, we must remind ourselves of all the times He has come through for us. Maybe he answered a big prayer request? Did you feel His comfort after a loved one died?

God is good, and we never need to doubt Him. The bad things that happen in this world are not because of Him. Terrible things happen in this world because of sin (Genesis 3). Try to separate God from the evil you see around you. God is not the author of evil; He is the author of peace.

    4. God Heals the Brokenhearted (Psalm 147:3)

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3).

This season of doubt you are going through will not endure forever. God will provide you with rest. He will heal your broken heart and bind up your wounds. Your doubt stems from wondering whether you will find a fulfilling job, a true friend, or a spouse. It is common to doubt God when these desires are unfulfilled.

Know that everything works out in God’s perfect time. He is working all things out for your good (Romans 8:28). Maybe you really thought you landed your dream job or found Mr. Right, but it was just another dead end. Trust in God during this doubtful time. God is pleased when you have faith in Him (Hebrews 11:6).

    5. God’s Love for You is Immeasurable (Romans 8:37-39)

“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:37-39).

Sadly, many of us doubt God’s love for us. This is often due to experiencing many challenging times. If you have gone through a job loss, the ending of a relationship, and the death of a loved one, it is normal to feel crestfallen and doubtful of God. During these seasons of doubt, God wants you to know He loves you.

Despite the pain you are experiencing, God loves you, and that will never change. There is nothing you can do to make Him stop loving you. Love is His very being. Hold on to the promise that is yours in Christ: the Father loves you, and you will never be separated from Him ever again.

    6. God Has Great Things in Store for You (Ephesians 3:20-21)

“Now to him who can do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen” (Ephesians 3:20-21).

God has wonderful things in store for those who love Him (1 Corinthians 2:9). The doubts you are experiencing will not weigh heavily upon you forever. Lean into the truth of God’s Word and rely on His promises. As Paul tells us, God can do immeasurably more than we could ask or imagine.

What does this tell you about God? What amazing things have you already seen God do in your life? Allow these things to help you see the light amidst the darkness. God’s ever-present love will bring light to the darkest night.

    7. God Has Unique Plans for Your Life (Jeremiah 29:11)

“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’” (Jeremiah 29:11).

Are you having doubts about your future? Perhaps you do not know where God is leading you. Rest in the truth that God has unique plans for your life. These are plans that only you can fulfill.

Find hope, comfort, and encouragement in this truth. Go to Him in prayer today and ask for His will to be revealed to you. Sometimes knowing where God is guiding can help ease doubts. While you may still struggle with doubts at times, you will know that God is always for you and never against you (Romans 8:31).
