Kansas Republicans overrode Democrat Gov. Laura Kelly’s veto of a bill protecting pro-life pregnancy centers on Friday.
The GOP-dominated Kansas House and Senate overturned Kelly’s veto within hours of her decision, the Kansas Reflector reported. Kelly claimed in her veto announcement that Kansans do not want the government involved in private medical decisions.
The legislation, House Bill 2635, is designed to ensure that pregnancy resource centers can continue offering support to women without being forced to comply with regulations that may conflict with their mission. These centers often provide counseling, material assistance, and resources for mothers choosing life, serving as a critical support system for women facing difficult decisions.
Republican leaders emphasized that the bill is about protecting the ability of these centers to operate freely and provide life-affirming care. Senate President Ty Masterson stated that the legislation “simply protects pregnancy resource centers’ ability to educate mothers and provide life-affirming care,” underscoring the intent to preserve their role in supporting both women and unborn children.
