“And the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen clothes, but folded up in a place by itself.” John 20:7 (NKJV)
The resurrection of Jesus is the cornerstone of our faith, but hidden in this moment is a detail that speaks volumes—the folded napkin. When Lazarus emerged from his tomb, he still wore his grave clothes because death would claim him again. Jesus, however, removed His grave clothes, declaring, “I’ll never die again!”
But look closer: beside the grave clothes was a napkin, neatly folded, set aside by itself. In Jewish culture, this was a profound statement. After a meal, if a host carefully folded his napkin and placed it separately, it meant two things: “I enjoyed this meal,” and, more importantly, “I will return.” The folded napkin is not just history. It is prophecy. It is a promise that Jesus is coming back.
We are drawing closer to the return of Jesus. Every prophecy has been fulfilled, except this one. The folded napkin is God’s calendar for His ultimate return. It reminds us that no power on earth, not even death itself, can hold back Jesus.
Like the disciples, we are ordinary people called to an extraordinary hope. Peter, a fisherman who had denied Jesus, was restored and became the mouthpiece of the early Church. Simon the Zealot, fiery and hot-tempered, became a pillar of faith. Thomas, the doubter, came to certainty. These were not kings or scholars. They were ordinary men who had simply been with Jesus. Their ordinary lives were transformed by His presence, just as ours are when we choose to walk with Him.
The folded napkin whispers to us today: what Jesus started in your life is not finished. You may feel buried by failure, weakness, or despair, but resurrection power is coming. The grave cannot hold what God has raised. The Third Day is upon us, and He is calling us to live in expectation.
Lift your eyes. The empty tomb declares victory. Death, where is your sting? Grave, where is your victory? Our Redeemer has conquered all, and just as He removed His grave clothes, He is preparing to remove every chain in our lives.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for rising from the dead and for the promise of Your return. Help me to live each day in hope, knowing that You are coming back. Transform my ordinary life with Your extraordinary power and remind me that death has no hold over me. Amen.
