A proposed seventh-grade reading list reportedly includes passages from the Book of Jonah, the story of David and Goliath in 1 Samuel, the story of the Tower of Babel in Genesis, and Chapter 3 of the Book of Lamentations. – The Daily Signal
The board is expected to hold a preliminary vote on this proposal in April, with a final vote planned to take place in June. If approved, the changes would take effect in 2030 across Texas.
Other age-based selections include stories such as the ‘Parable of the Prodigal Son’ for first grade, the ‘Road to Damascus’ for third grade, and books including Ecclesiastes and the Book of Job for high school English classes.
This proposal follows a 2023 Texas law requiring the state education agency to recommend at least one Bible reading per grade level from kindergarten through 12th grade.
To develop the list, the State Board of Education gathered input from thousands of teachers and compiled a broader set of about 300 literary works, including both biblical passages and classic literature.
Scripture has shaped Western civilization’s understanding of morality, justice, and human purpose, and many believe students benefit from exposure to these foundational texts, whether for literary or historical understanding.
