“Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst.” John 4:14 (NKJV)

Jacob’s well was not just a hole in the ground. It was a legacy. It had been protected, cleaned, and preserved from generation to generation. Nearly 1900 years later, when Jesus sat beside it, the water was still flowing. People were still coming. It was still giving life. That is the power of a well that is cared for.

There are some wells in your life that did not start with you. Someone prayed before you ever knew how to pray. Someone worshiped when it was not popular. Someone stayed faithful so that you could one day draw from what they built. Like Jacob’s well, it was passed down, protected, and kept open so it could still flow. But a well does not stay clean on its own. It must be maintained. It must be protected. It must be revisited again and again. If it becomes clogged or neglected, the water may still be there, but it will not flow freely.

Jesus made it clear that what He offers is not shallow. It is not temporary. It is not something that leaves you empty again. It is living water. It satisfies the deepest part of your soul. When you truly drink from Him, the things of this world lose their grip. You are not constantly searching for the next thing to fill you, because you have already found what satisfies. Some people are still thirsty because they have only stood near the well. They have tasted a little, but they have never gone deep. There is more available. The well is deep. It is not ankle deep or surface level. It is a place where you can be completely immersed in the presence of God.

There is also a responsibility that comes with it. If you go dry, those connected to you feel it. Your family, your home, and the next generation depend on whether you keep the well open. What you maintain today becomes what they draw from tomorrow. Think about David longing for water from the well of Bethlehem. When his mighty men risked their lives to bring it to him, he could not even drink it. He realized that the well had been preserved through sacrifice. It cost something for that water to still be there.

In the same way, the wells in your life require intention. They require time with God, prayer, worship, and a heart that stays open to Him. You are not just maintaining it for yourself. You are protecting something that others will one day need.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the wells that have been dug before me. Help me to honor them by keeping them clean and open. Stir a deeper hunger in me for Your presence. I do not want shallow faith. I want to go deeper and drink fully from the living water You offer. Let my life remain full and flowing so that my family and those around me can draw from it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
