“And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not.” Genesis 28:16

We often talk about needing more power, but what we are really longing for is the presence of God, because He is the power. The presence is not an atmosphere we create; it is a person we welcome. Jacob discovered this when he was running in fear and uncertainty. Alone at Bethel, he laid his head on a rock and fell asleep. What looked like isolation became an encounter. Heaven opened. He saw a ladder reaching from earth to heaven with angels ascending and descending. What goes up in worship and prayer invites what comes down in glory and breakthrough. If nothing goes up, nothing comes down.

Jacob did not receive instructions first. He received awareness. When he woke up, he said, “Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not.” That is what the presence of God does. He is already near, but our eyes are opened to Him. The veil has been torn from top to bottom, meaning God Himself made the way. We are no longer separated. We are invited into His presence through Christ.

When we enter that presence, it both comforts and exposes. Adam tried to cover himself with fig leaves after sin, but the presence of God revealed what was hidden, so healing could begin. That is why we must learn to host the Holy Spirit, to welcome Him, to make room for Him. Like a dove, He is gentle and sensitive. He does not force Himself upon us. He rests where He is honored and lifts when He is grieved. So we must be careful how we live before Him.

The dove is deeply spiritual in Scripture. When Jesus was baptized in water, the Holy Spirit descended in the form of a dove and rested upon Him. Doves are observant and sensitive. A small disturbance causes them to fly away. We must be careful how we approach God’s presence. In Noah’s day, the dove was sent out after the flood, but it found no place to rest because everything was covered in death. It returned with nothing but the message that life had not yet fully appeared. Later, it returned with an olive branch, a sign of peace, a new beginning, and a new world emerging from judgment.

In the same way, when the Holy Spirit touches our lives, He brings evidence of another world. Peace replaces chaos. Life replaces death. Prayer begins to carry something heavenly, like that olive branch carried by the dove. We become people who speak, live, and move differently because we are carrying evidence of His presence. So we do not just ask for power. We welcome His presence. We become hosts to the Holy Spirit, sensitive like the dove, careful not to grieve Him, eager to honor Him. And like Jacob, we awaken to the truth that God is already here.

Prayer: Lord, make me sensitive to Your presence like the dove You have shown in Your Word. Teach me to honor You, welcome You, and never grieve Your Spirit. Open my eyes like Jacob, so I recognize You are already with me. Let my life carry the evidence of Your peace and Your power. Amen.
