A woman allegedly tied to Minnesota’s massive “Feeding Our Future” scandal has been charged in a daycare fraud scheme after being featured in a viral video by influencer Nick Shirley, authorities said.

Fahima Egeh Mahamud was charged Wednesday with wire fraud and conspiracy to defraud the United States, according to court documents.
Earlier this year, Mahamud was indicted for her alleged role in the initial $250 million “Feeding Our Future” scheme. Prosecutors allege she enrolled Future Leaders Early Learning — a Minneapolis daycare where she served as CEO — into the federal child nutrition program, falsely claiming to serve thousands of meals at her childcare center.
In addition to the earlier allegations, prosecutors now accuse Mahamud of carrying out a second fraud scheme involving Minnesota’s Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP), which helps low-income families pay for daycare services. Federal authorities say she submitted more than 13,000 fraudulent reimbursement claims totaling approximately $4.6 million between 2022 and 2025.
Investigators allege Mahamud falsely certified that families had paid required co-payments in order to qualify for federal reimbursements. According to prosecutors, those certifications were a critical condition for receiving taxpayer funds.
The case gained national attention after independent journalist and influencer Nick Shirley released a viral video earlier this year showing apparently empty Somali-run childcare facilities across Minneapolis while alleging widespread fraud involving public assistance programs. The footage triggered a major federal response, including the freezing of roughly $185 million in federal childcare funding to Minnesota and the deployment of thousands of federal agents to assist with investigations and enforcement operations.
The broader “Feeding Our Future” scandal has already become one of the largest COVID-era fraud cases in American history, with hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars allegedly stolen through fraudulent meal reimbursement programs intended to feed needy children during the pandemic.
