As America approaches its 250th anniversary, the Trump administration is highlighting a new counterterrorism strategy that focuses heavily on border security, immigration enforcement, transnational gangs, and domestic extremist groups. Supporters say the plan marks a significant departure from previous administrations and represents a return to policies centered on protecting American citizens at home.

The strategy identifies three main categories of terrorist groups that threaten the U.S.: “Narcoterrorists and Transnational Gangs,” “Legacy Islamist terrorists,” and “Violent Left-Wing Extremists, including Anarchists and Anti-Fascists.” The administration’s identification of cartel gang bangers, jihadists, and Antifa thugs as its top targets is a drastic change from just a few years ago when the Biden administration identified supposed white nationalists and right-wing domestic extremists as the “most lethal elements of today’s domestic terrorism threat.”

President Trump’s counterterrorism strategy rightly places border security, immigration enforcement, and hemispheric dominance at the top of its agenda for securing America from terrorist threats. Whereas previous administrations gladly spent untold amounts of American blood and treasure fighting the nebulous threat of terror globally and especially in the Middle East, Trump’s strategy openly touts a “return to common sense which dictates that some things are more important than others and … some regions are more important than others.” Common sense requires a focus on immigration and on our own hemisphere.

The Trump administration has also revoked more than 100,000 visas, sought to revoke Temporary Protected Status for all groups, tightened the process for acquiring legal resident status in the U.S., reduced naturalizations, and placed an immigration ban on dozens of countries deemed a threat to U.S. national security and public safety.
Released in May, the strategy emphasizes that securing America’s borders is one of the most effective ways to prevent terrorism and criminal activity from reaching American communities. The administration points to ongoing deportation efforts, increased immigration enforcement, and the designation of groups such as MS-13 and Tren de Aragua as foreign terrorist organizations. The strategy also highlights efforts to combat fentanyl trafficking, including President Trump’s designation of illicit fentanyl and its precursor chemicals as weapons of mass destruction.
Another notable aspect of the strategy is its focus on violent left-wing extremism and Antifa. The document argues that previous administrations devoted significant resources to monitoring conservative groups while failing to adequately address threats from left-wing organizations. The administration points to arrests, prosecutions, and the designation of Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization as evidence of its commitment to combating political violence regardless of its source.
The strategy also addresses international concerns, particularly the rise of jihadist groups in Africa and the persecution of Christians in several regions of the continent. Rather than emphasizing nation-building or democracy promotion, the administration says its primary goals are preventing terrorism, protecting American interests, and defending vulnerable Christian populations targeted by extremist groups. Supporters view this as a dramatic shift away from what they describe as decades of ineffective interventionist foreign policy.
For many conservatives, the strategy represents a broader effort to restore what they see as the proper role of government: protecting citizens, enforcing laws, securing borders, and confronting genuine threats to public safety. While debates continue over specific policies and international conflicts, supporters argue that the administration’s focus on immigration, cartels, violent extremism, and Christian persecution reflects a more realistic assessment of the challenges facing America today.

Let’s pray that America’s leaders would protect the innocent, uphold justice, and pursue policies that strengthen the nation while preserving the freedoms and values upon which it was founded.
