The Trump administration is pursuing the revocation of citizenship for 17 naturalized Americans accused of concealing serious crimes or providing false information during the naturalization process. Justice Department officials say the effort is part of a broader commitment to ensuring that U.S. citizenship is granted only to those who meet the legal requirements.

    From Fox News:

The Department of Justice announced Monday that it is moving to revoke the citizenship of 17 individuals who allegedly obtained naturalization through fraud or deception.

The individuals, from 13 different countries, are accused of serious criminal conduct, including child sexual abuse, narcotics trafficking and large-scale financial fraud.

Nearly all of the individuals reportedly lied during the naturalization process, claiming that they did not commit any crimes the authorities were unaware of, claims that were later found to be untrue or misleading. By making false statements, officials argue that they failed to meet the statutory “good moral character” requirement for U.S. citizenship under federal law.

According to the Justice Department, the individuals targeted in the denaturalization effort range in age from 39 to 69 and come from countries across North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Officials allege that many were specifically asked under oath whether they had committed crimes that had not yet resulted in arrest or prosecution and that they falsely denied such conduct during their immigration interviews.

Several of the cases involve particularly serious allegations. Six of the 17 individuals are accused of child sex crimes, including statutory rape and offenses involving explicit images of minors. One case reportedly involves a Roman Catholic priest accused of using his position of trust to groom and abuse a child. Other cases center on major financial crimes, including multimillion-dollar securities fraud schemes, healthcare fraud, and money laundering connected to international criminal organizations.

Federal officials also allege that some of the individuals manipulated the immigration system through identity fraud. According to the DOJ, several applicants used false names, concealed previous denials, misrepresented family relationships, or reapplied under different identities after being rejected. In one case, authorities said modern digitization of fingerprint records helped uncover an alleged decades-old deception that had previously gone undetected.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche emphasized that citizenship is a privilege that must be obtained honestly and in accordance with the law. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin echoed that sentiment, arguing that those who violate American laws and misrepresent themselves during immigration proceedings should not be allowed to retain the benefits of citizenship.

The cases highlight the government’s growing focus on immigration enforcement and fraud prevention. While denaturalization actions remain relatively uncommon, federal law permits citizenship to be revoked when it is proven that an individual obtained it through willful misrepresentation or concealment of material facts. The administration’s actions are likely to fuel ongoing debates about immigration enforcement, border security, and the standards required for becoming an American citizen.
