Americans may be one step closer to ending the twice-yearly ritual of changing their clocks. The U.S. House voted Tuesday to make daylight saving time permanent, advancing legislation backed by President Trump that would keep the nation on the same time year-round if approved by the Senate.

For years, lawmakers have debated whether changing the clocks every spring and fall is worth the disruption. Supporters of the latest proposal argue that keeping one consistent time year-round would eliminate unnecessary confusion and reduce some of the health and safety concerns associated with the current system.
From the Daily Wire:
The U.S. House on Tuesday overwhelmingly passed a bill backed by President Donald Trump that would make daylight saving time permanent year-round, sending the legislation to the Senate.
The Sunshine Protection Act, which would end the twice-yearly clock changes, passed with bipartisan support in a 308–117 vote. Twenty-two Republicans joined 95 Democrats in opposing the measure.
If enacted, the legislation would make daylight saving time permanent, keeping clocks set to the time currently observed from March through November. States could opt out only if they did so before the law took effect. Most of Arizona, Hawaii, and several U.S. territories, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, do not observe daylight saving time.
President Trump has long advocated ending the twice-yearly clock changes. After the bill advanced out of committee, he urged Congress to act, calling the current system a “ridiculous, twice-yearly production” and describing permanent daylight saving time as the more popular option.
Florida lawmakers also played a prominent role in advancing the measure. Reps. Kat Cammack and Gus Bilirakis argued that the practice of changing clocks twice each year no longer serves the American people and that permanent daylight saving time would better reflect the needs of their constituents.
Not everyone agrees, however. Some lawmakers and medical experts believe permanent standard time would be a better option because additional morning sunlight more closely aligns with the body’s natural sleep cycle. Others have expressed concern that permanent daylight saving time would leave many children traveling to school before sunrise during the winter months.
Supporters point to research suggesting that eliminating the spring time change could improve public safety. Studies have found increases in heart attacks, strokes, and fatal traffic accidents in the days immediately following the shift to daylight saving time. They argue that keeping one consistent time throughout the year would eliminate those seasonal disruptions.
The proposal now heads to the Senate, where its future remains uncertain. Although similar legislation has gained momentum in recent years, lawmakers have yet to reach a consensus on whether permanent daylight saving time or permanent standard time is the better solution.
While changing the clocks may seem like a small issue, it affects the daily routines of millions of Americans. Decisions like these remind us that public policy often touches ordinary life in practical ways. As lawmakers consider what will best serve the nation, let us pray that elected officials would pursue wisdom, carefully weigh the evidence, and make decisions that promote the well-being of the people they represent.
Pray for members of Congress and the Senate as they consider this legislation. Ask God to give them wisdom as they evaluate its potential benefits and drawbacks, and pray that they would govern with discernment and a genuine desire to serve the American people.
