U.S. Military Uses Seaborne Drones in Combat for the First Time During Iran Strike

The U.S. military reached a new milestone in modern warfare this week by deploying autonomous seaborne drones during a strike against an Iranian naval base. The operation marks the first known combat use of these unmanned surface vessels by American forces, highlighting how rapidly military technology is changing.

The successful mission also demonstrates the growing role of artificial intelligence and autonomous systems in defending U.S. interests overseas. As these technologies become more common on the battlefield, military leaders will continue weighing their strategic advantages alongside the responsibilities that come with their use.

    From The Hill:

The military utilized three Corsair unmanned surface vessels to strike a ship maintenance facility and a submarine at the Bandar Abbas Naval Base, the headquarters of the Iranian Navy, during Sunday’s fresh round of strikes, the U.S. Central Command (Centcom) announced on Monday.

“Last night’s strikes degraded Iran’s ability to continue attacking commercial shipping,” Centcom, which oversees the U.S. military in the Middle East, said.

Corsair, a 24-foot autonomous boat that carries up to 1,000 pounds of payload and reaches over 35 knots, is produced by Saronic, a Texas-based defense company founded in 2022.

Although this was the first known combat use of the Corsair, the vessels have already supported U.S. military operations. Last month, one helped recover the crew of a U.S. Army AH-64 Apache helicopter after it went down near the coast of Oman. The drones are also part of the Navy’s artificial intelligence and drone task force, which began operating in the U.S. Central Command region earlier this year.

Following the operation, Saronic said it was honored that its technology contributed to the mission and helped protect American troops. The company reaffirmed its commitment to developing autonomous maritime systems that strengthen the security of the United States and its allies.

The strike comes amid continued tensions between the United States and Iran and reflects the military’s increasing reliance on unmanned systems across land, air, and sea. Defense officials have argued that these technologies can improve mission effectiveness while reducing risks to personnel, particularly during operations against heavily defended targets.

The tools used in warfare continue to evolve, but the need for wisdom never changes. As new technologies reshape military operations, let us pray that America’s leaders and military commanders would exercise discernment, pursue justice, seek peace, and make decisions that protect innocent lives.

Pray for the men and women serving in our armed forces, especially those deployed in dangerous regions around the world. Ask God to give military and government leaders wisdom as they navigate growing international tensions. Pray for Israel and its leaders as they face ongoing security threats, and ask the Lord to protect the Israeli people, bring stability to the region, and guide all nations toward peace.
