Religious liberty in public schools continues to be the subject of legal battles across the country. Now, a Washington state school district is facing a lawsuit after a Christian student allegedly was forced to remain at a school assembly despite objecting that its message conflicted with her faith.

The American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) alleges that a middle school student was prevented from acting according to her Christian convictions during a mandatory school assembly. The organization also claims this was not an isolated event, but part of a pattern of hostility toward the student’s religious beliefs.

    From CBN News:

“This latest incident began during a mandatory ‘Inclusion Assembly’ at Sylvester Middle School. As the presentation progressed, our client realized that the assembly was covering topics that conflicted with her family’s religious beliefs,” an ACLJ statement says. “What followed was not a lesson in tolerance, but hours of moral instruction pressing students to celebrate ideas that directly conflict with our client’s Christian faith.”

Christina Compagnone (Stierhoff), Senior Managing Counsel with the ACLJ, contends, “A child identified a conflict with her religious beliefs. She respectfully asked to leave. She sought help from school officials. She explained her concerns. She was visibly upset. And the response from the adults responsible for protecting her welfare was simply outrageous: You have no choice.”

“No child should have to choose between her education and her faith,” Compagnone says.

According to the ACLJ, the student became increasingly distressed during the assembly because she believed the presentation conflicted with her family’s biblical beliefs. The organization says she repeatedly asked to leave but was required to remain, leaving her in tears.

The lawsuit also points to two earlier incidents involving the same student. In one, when she was in second grade, school officials allegedly searched her backpack after she shared her Christian faith with classmates, confiscating her Bible and gospel tracts. Earlier this year, the ACLJ says she was again singled out after discussing Jesus with classmates and was pulled from class and reprimanded.

The ACLJ reports that it sent three demand letters to Highline Public Schools asking district leaders to protect the student’s religious freedom and end what it describes as “religious animus” within the district. After those efforts failed to produce a resolution, the organization filed suit.

At the time of reporting, Highline Public Schools had not publicly responded to the allegations in court. A communications officer told CBN News the district was unable to comment because it had not yet been formally served with the lawsuit. As with any civil lawsuit, the allegations remain claims that will be tested through the legal process.

Cases involving religious liberty in public schools often have implications beyond a single student or district. They help define how constitutional protections for free exercise of religion are applied in educational settings. As intercessors, let us pray that courts uphold both the rights guaranteed by the Constitution and an environment where every student is treated with fairness, dignity, and respect. We can also pray that schools do not pressure children to violate their sincerely held beliefs.

Pray that the truth comes to light as this case moves through the courts. Pray for wisdom for the judges, attorneys, and school officials involved. Ask God to protect the religious freedom of students across America and to give Christian students the courage to remain faithful to their convictions.
