The federal health department made a significant announcement this week — and it’s getting attention from both sides of the aisle.

The Department of Health and Human Services says it will no longer push doctors, hospitals, and universities to meet race-based targets. Instead, it will enforce civil rights law the same way for every individual American, regardless of race.
From the Daily Signal:
“HHS will not pressure doctors, hospitals, universities, or state agencies to sort people by race to satisfy a statistic,” said Paula Stannard, the office’s director. “This rule restores common sense and true equality to Title VI enforcement.”
The rule also aligns with President Trump’s Executive Order “Restoring Equality of Opportunity and Meritocracy,” signed in April 2025, which eliminated disparate impact as a standalone basis for federal enforcement action.
The HHS Office for Civil Rights says it will continue to consider statistical disparities, along with other evidence, to evaluate whether intentional discrimination occurred in health care.
Under the previous framework, the government could target an organization for discrimination even without a specific complaint — simply because its outcomes showed statistical differences between racial groups. This is called “disparate impact.” The new rule eliminates that as a standalone basis for enforcement.
The agency was clear: it is not walking away from civil rights enforcement. It will still investigate complaints, conduct compliance reviews, and take action against intentional discrimination based on race, color, and national origin.
Every person is made in the image of God — not as a data point or a demographic category, but as an individual of irreplaceable worth. Christians can hold two things at once: a deep commitment to fighting real racial injustice, and a belief that true equality means one standard applied to every person.
Pray for wisdom for those in authority — and for every patient, in every hospital, to be treated with dignity and fairness.
