MSNBC is facing renewed scrutiny after a report alleged that one of its senior national security reporters participated in a China trip organized by a Chinese Communist Party-linked organization and did not disclose that relationship to readers while later reporting on China-related issues. The allegations have also reignited debate over journalistic ethics, transparency, and the influence of foreign governments on American media.

    Pray for your fellow intercessor.

The controversy comes amid heightened concerns about the Chinese Communist Party’s efforts to shape public opinion abroad. U.S. officials and lawmakers have repeatedly warned that Beijing uses a variety of influence operations—including partnerships with academic institutions, business leaders, and media organizations—to advance its interests outside China.

    From Just the News:

Rohde himself announced he was taking the trip back in 2011 in a column titled, “Will ‘Made in America’ sell in China?” In the column, which no longer bears his name but did in a previous archived version visited by Just the News on Tuesday, Rohde says that he and other journalists “are visiting China this week on a trip organized by the China-United States Exchange Foundation, a non-profit group run by businessmen with close ties to the Chinese government.”

    …

Most news organizations focused on reporters’ ethics eschew hiding the fact that the reporter’s trip was paid for by the subject he or she is covering. For example, the Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Conduct explicitly states that journalists should “Refuse gifts, favors, fees, free travel and special treatment, and avoid political and other outside activities that may compromise integrity or impartiality, or may damage credibility.”

    …

CUSEF is registered under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), a law designed to make foreign influence transparent. The CPPCC is part of China’s “United Front” work, a Soviet-era strategy used to influence Chinese communities overseas, foreign governments, and others to support the policies preferred by Beijing.

According to the report, the China-United States Exchange Foundation (CUSEF) organized and paid for the 2011 trip that included Reuters reporter David Rohde. CUSEF’s founder, Tung Chee-hwa, served for years as a vice chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, an advisory body that U.S. officials have identified as part of the Chinese Communist Party’s United Front influence apparatus. Critics argue that sponsored travel by organizations connected to foreign governments should be fully disclosed whenever journalists report on related issues to avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest.

The allegations also come as President Trump has intensified warnings about Chinese efforts to influence American institutions, including the media. While the report does not present evidence that Rohde was paid to produce favorable coverage, it raises broader questions about transparency and whether readers receive enough information to evaluate potential conflicts. At a time when public trust in the media remains low, even the perception of undisclosed foreign-sponsored travel can further erode confidence in news organizations.

Even worse, Rohde is not the only journalist who went to China. Natalie Winters, a White House correspondent, shared a list on X of over 20 journalists representing several publications who took “pay-for-play” trips to China. According to Winters, many of these journalists proudly stated that their views on China had changed after their trips. With all this in mind, it’s worth asking: how many of our news sites, channels, and publications have been compromised by China?

Scripture calls believers to walk in truth and integrity, especially in positions of public trust. Whether in government, journalism, or any other sphere of influence, transparency and honesty are essential to maintaining credibility. As concerns over foreign influence continue to grow, Christians can pray that truth would prevail, hidden agendas would be exposed, and those entrusted with informing the public would conduct their work with integrity and accountability.
