For generations, American patients have quietly carried the weight of global pharmaceutical research — paying three to four times more for the same drugs that citizens in other developed countries purchase near manufacturing cost. A sweeping new policy shift under President Donald Trump is changing that dynamic, and the numbers are starting to show it.

The administration announced the largest annual drop in U.S. prescription drug prices since 1963, driven by Trump’s Most Favored Nation executive policy and the TrumpRx platform. Prescription prices have declined every single month of 2026, falling 3.9 percent since Trump took office. Nonprescription drugs dropped 2.4 percent and medical-care commodities 2.7 percent over the past year.

TrumpRx has already generated $700 million in patient savings. GLP-1 drugs that previously exceeded $1,000 monthly now start at $149; many other high-cost medications (insulin, inhalers, fertility drugs, cholesterol treatments) have fallen 50–90%. Prescription prices are down 3.9% since Trump took office and have declined every month of 2026.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) also locked in more than $10 billion in pharmaceutical savings this fiscal year, with hundreds of billions projected long-term. The administration states this is the first time a president has actually lowered prescription drug prices.
Americans have long paid substantially higher prices for brand-name prescription drugs than patients in other developed countries — often three to four times as much, according to RAND analyses of 2022 data comparing the U.S. to 33 OECD nations.
Rep. Jimmy Patronis, R-Fla., told Just the News the results reflect Trump’s instincts as a dealmaker. “Without even twisting an arm, without trying to pass a new bill, he brought all these players together with TrumpRx to lower the cost of prescription drugs, and he continues to do that because this guy understands leverage. He understands the bully pulpit.”
The backdrop makes the turnaround significant. Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows prescription drug prices were 5.5 times higher in 2024 than in 1985, rising roughly three times as fast as overall consumer inflation during that period. Brand-name medications saw repeated list-price increases that outpaced general inflation for years, with cumulative rises leaving many Americans facing costs several times higher than in the early 2000s.
Trump’s Most Favored Nation policy confronts the imbalance directly. By securing voluntary agreements with 17 major manufacturers — including Eli Lilly, AbbVie, and Johnson & Johnson — covering roughly 86 percent of the branded market, the administration requires U.S. prices to match the lowest levels paid by comparable nations. It effectively ends decades of Americans subsidizing cheaper medicines abroad while shouldering a disproportionate share of global pharmaceutical innovation costs.
Proverbs calls for just weights and honest scales — a standard that, for decades, the global pharmaceutical pricing structure failed to meet for American patients. Families who rationed insulin, skipped refills, or went without treatment while other nations paid a fraction of the cost deserve to see that burden lifted.
