“But one thing I do: forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13–14
Babe Ruth was known as one of the greatest baseball players of all time, the home run king for decades. But what most people forget is that he also held another record — the most strikeouts. He was both the home run leader and the strikeout leader. When Hank Aaron eventually broke Ruth’s home run record, he also broke his strikeout record. That tells us something about life:
You cannot hit home runs without swinging and missing sometimes. If you stop swinging, you stop winning.
We’ve all had moments when we swung and missed — when we gave God our best effort but fell flat on our face. Simon Peter knew that kind of failure. He boldly promised Jesus, “I’ll never deny You.” But when the pressure came, he struck out three times. Each denial must have felt like another swing that missed the mark. And when that rooster crowed, the sound of his failure echoed in his soul.
But that wasn’t the end of Peter’s story. When Jesus rose from the dead, He told Mary to deliver a message: “Go tell My disciples and Peter that I’m alive.” He mentioned Peter by name. The one who failed most publicly was the one Jesus intentionally reached for. That moment of grace changed everything.
On the day of Pentecost, God put the bat back in Peter’s hands. The man who denied Jesus three times was now chosen to preach the first sermon of the church. The same mouth that once said, “I don’t know Him,” now proclaimed, “This Jesus, whom you crucified, God has raised from the dead.” And with one swing — one sermon — three thousand souls were saved. What the world saw as a failure, God turned into a grand slam.
Maybe you’ve struck out in your walk with God. Maybe you’ve let Him down more times than you can count. But your story doesn’t end there. God still believes in you. He’s saying, “Get back up, step up to the plate, and swing again.” His strength is made perfect in your weakness. The same Spirit that filled Peter can fill you today.
Prayer: Lord, thank You that failure is not the end of my story. When I fall, help me rise again. When I miss the mark, help me swing again with faith and courage. Remind me that You haven’t given up on me. Fill me with Your Spirit so I can live boldly for You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
