JERUSALEM, Israel\u00a0\u2013 For the first time,\u00a0a Syrian head of state will visit the White House. Monday’s visit by President Ahmad al-Sharra marks a major turnaround in U.S.-Syria relations.<\/p>\n
Before his visit, the U.S. military released a video of al-Sharaa playing basketball with CENTCOM Commander Brad Cooper.\u00a0The\u00a0image of al-Sharaa contrasts with his past as an Al Qaeda commander with a $10 million U.S. bounty on his head for killing U.S. and allied troops.<\/p>\n
Despite his past, the White House hopes al-Sharaa can play a key role in President Trump’s vision of Middle East peace.<\/p>\n
Just before the visit, 100 faith leaders signed a letter hoping the president could use his meeting with al-Sharaa to protect Christians and Druze in southern Syria.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Religious freedom advocate Matthew Faracci is one of the faith leaders who signed.<\/p>\n
He told CBN News,\u00a0<\/em>\u201cBack in July, there was an October 7th-style\u00a0attack in Suwayda, many thousands were killed \u2013 unspeakable horrors that were conducted there:\u00a0grandparents and their grandbabies thrown off buildings; children raped, old people burned, people\u2019s hearts ripped out\u00a0\u2013\u00a0the most barbaric, horrific, things you can think about.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Faracci explained, \u201cThe purpose of the letter is to first of all thank President Trump for his incredible leadership on religious freedom recently in Nigeria. The President essentially gave a Monroe Doctrine, if you will, about American foreign policy that said religious freedom is going to be one of the tenets of the administration and we\u2019re not going to allow other countries to infringe upon other people\u2019s religious freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n He contends the situation in Syria is now desperate.\u00a0<\/p>\n “They\u2019re being starved, they\u2019re being murdered, they\u2019re being deprived of water, they\u2019re being deprived of medical supplies.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n The 100 faith leaders have a simple but critical request.<\/p>\n \u201cSo now, a city of between 700,000 to 750,000 is surrounded by military forces, and they can\u2019t go in or out, and so they have a chokehold on the aid.\u00a0 So, the letter is asking for a humanitarian corridor from Hadar, which is near the Israeli border, to Suwayda to allow the free flow of humanitarian aid back and forth,” Faracci explained.<\/p>\n He continued, “We know you have leverage over the President of Syria, so we encourage you to use that leverage, to tell him, hey, you\u2019ve got to stop this activity, and you\u2019ve got to respect religious liberty in Syria.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n ***Please sign up for\u00a0CBN Newsletters\u00a0to ensure you receive\u00a0the latest news from a Christian perspective.***<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n In Israel, the remains of soldier Hadar Goldin came home to his family and a Jewish burial after 11 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n Leah Goldin, his mother, recalled, “In August (2014), after they kidnapped Hadar from us, and we shouted that we must not leave Gaza without bringing Hadar back, it was obvious to us that the State of Israel would not leave soldiers behind. It took us 11 years, 11 years, to bring him back with the help of the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) and the security forces, and let no one be mistaken.”<\/p>\n Before Goldin’s body was returned, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared, “We said at the beginning of the war that we would return all the hostages without exception. Two hundred and fifty-five were kidnapped, including four who were kidnapped earlier.
