(The Center Square) \u2013 A federal judge has approved the release of grand jury materials from the case of Ghislaine Maxwell, convicted child sex offender and close associate of Jeffrey Epstein.\n<\/p>\n
U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer\u2019s Tuesday\u00a0decision<\/strong>\u00a0grants the Department of Justice\u2019s request that grand jury transcripts, exhibits and investigative materials related to Maxwell\u2019s case be unsealed.<\/p>\n Engelmayer had previously denied the DOJ\u2019s request to unseal materials because the cited \u201cextensive public interest,\u201d he reasoned, did not override legal protective orders.\n<\/p>\n With the recent enactment of the\u00a0Epstein Files Transparency Act<\/strong>, however, the situation changed. Engelmayer said the act, which requires the U.S. attorney general to release all documents related to Epstein and Maxwell within 30 days, \u201cimplicitly reflects Congress\u2019s intent to overcome grand jury secrecy.\u201d\n<\/p>\n DOJ has promised to \u201cwithhold or redact segregable portions that contain personally identifiable and other victim-related information.\u201d\n<\/p>\n The Tuesday ruling also requires that before any materials covered by the order are publicly released, \u201cthe United States Attorney for this District personally certify that such material has been rigorously reviewed for \u2013 and found to be in \u2013 compliance with Section 2(c)(1)(A) of the Act, which protects victims against revelations of their identities and invasions of their privacy.\u201d\n<\/p>\n \n This article was originally published at The Center Square.
