I questioned why God would allow her to be born with such a devastating condition, one with no cure and a short life expectancy.

During my teenage years, I was angry at the thought of her physical suffering, and watching my parents so utterly helpless broke my heart. Feelings of failure as a big sister lingered because I was unable to bring comfort or healing to Franje. My every effort to be the “good girl” — avoiding extra problems for my parents, never asking for anything extravagant like big birthday parties — couldn’t lessen the heavy load my father and stepmother carried while they provided round-the-clock care for her.

Recently, I remembered this when I came across an account of Mother Teresa’s life and her “dark night of the soul.” A collection of her private writings, published in Come Be My Light, details a time when she felt distant from God for years. Imagine dedicating your life to service and feeling disconnected from the One who called you to serve.

However, despite her doubts and questions, Mother Teresa’s faith remained steadfast. Someone once approached her with a prayer request for clarity. She refused and said, “I have never had clarity. What I always had was trust. So I will pray that you trust God.”

This hit me hard. Like Mother Teresa, I experienced my own dark night of the soul, a time of doubt where it felt like I was shouting into the void. It seemed like God was either absent or not listening, or maybe He didn’t care at all.

But what I learned when navigating Franje’s health crisis, and later through reading about Mother Teresa’s experience, is this: Faith isn’t always about feeling blessed and connected. Sometimes it’s about holding on even when you feel like letting go. It’s about serving, loving, and giving even when you’re not sure what you believe in.

Nahum 1:7 offers a picture of this kind of holding on and finding security when life is hard: “The LORD is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble, And He knows those who take refuge in Him.”

Trusting God isn’t always easy. When we get frustrated or discouraged by a certain outcome, we may be tempted to question God’s character. We may doubt that He is good or trustworthy. But as we embrace these dark nights of the soul while continuing to believe He has a purpose for us, our faith gets stronger.

If we let them, struggles often lead us to our greatest growth and impact. And they can help us see God clearly for who He is. He is good. Always.

God, remind me that You always have a purpose and a plan in motion, one of hope and a good future. Grant me strength and faith to trust in Your path, no matter how hard it is to walk on. Thank You for never letting me go.
