Since President Trump took office again last year, he has talked a great deal about acquiring Greenland. However, Secretary Rubio recently told lawmakers that the President hopes to buy, not conquer, the Arctic island.\n<\/p>\n

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has told lawmakers that President Trump plans to buy Greenland rather than invade it, while Mr. Trump has asked aides to give him an updated plan for acquiring the territory, U.S. officials said on Tuesday.\n<\/p>\n

Mr. Rubio made his remarks in a briefing on Monday with lawmakers from the main armed services and foreign policy committees in both chambers of Congress. The same day, Mr. Trump told aides to deliver an updated plan.\n<\/p>\n

The congressional briefing was focused on Venezuela, but lawmakers raised concerns about Mr. Trump\u2019s intentions on Greenland given aggressive\u00a0remarks\u00a0this week by the American president and a top aide, Stephen Miller, two officials said.<\/p>\n

President Trump\u2019s ambition to acquire Greenland has once again made headlines following the capture of Nicol\u00e1s Maduro. The Trump administration has said that dominance of the Western Hemisphere is a top priority. Meanwhile, the President has said for months that the acquisition of Greenland is a national security priority, calling it \u201cvital\u201d to keep adversaries like Russia and China out of the Arctic.\n<\/p>\n

The Times notes that Greenland is \u201ca sparsely populated autonomous territory that is ruled by Denmark, a member of NATO.\u201d On Tuesday, leaders of Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Poland, all members of NATO, joined with the Prime Minister of Denmark to push back on President Trump aspirations. The leaders said that \u201cSecurity in the Arctic must therefore be achieved collectively, in conjunction with NATO allies including the United States.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

While President Trump does hope to acquire the island peacefully, the White House did issue a statement on Tuesday claiming he had not ruled out a U.S. invasion, according to the Times.\n<\/p>\n
