Minnesota is suing the Department of Homeland Security over immigration\u00a0operations in the state,\u00a0following the fatal shooting of a woman last week by an\u00a0Immigration and Customs Enforcement\u00a0agent.\n<\/p>\n

The lawsuit, which names\u00a0Homeland Security Secretary\u00a0Kristi Noem, alleged that the Trump administration\u2019s recent surge of immigration agents to Minnesota is\u00a0\u201cunprecedented\u201d and \u201creflects an alarming escalation of the Trump Administration\u2019s retaliatory actions towards the state.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

The cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul joined the lawsuit that aims to block federal immigration enforcement\u00a0operations\u00a0in the state.\n<\/p>\n

\u201c[President] Donald Trump should know, as long as federal agents are in our city acting unconstitutionally against our neighbors, we will continue to push back with everything we got,\u201d Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, a Democrat, said at a press conference Monday.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0retreat in Minneapolis. We\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0back down\u00a0in\u00a0Minnesota. We stand up against bullies,\u201d Frey said.\n<\/p>\n

Minnesota\u00a0Attorney General Keith Ellison\u00a0says immigration operations in\u00a0Minnesota\u00a0must \u201cstop.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

The state is asking the court to \u201cend the surge of thousands of DHS agents into Minnesota,\u201d Ellison said during a press conference Monday to announce the lawsuit.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cWe ask the courts to end the DHS unlawful behavior in our state, the intimidation, the threats, the violence,\u201d Ellison continued.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cWe ask the courts to end the tactics on our places of worship, our schools, our courts, our marketplaces, our hospitals, and even funeral homes. The deployment of thousands of armed mass DHS agents to Minnesota has done our state serious harm. This is, in essence, a\u00a0federal invasion of the Twin Cities and Minnesota, and it must stop,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n

In response, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin\u00a0claims Ellison has \u201cmade it abundantly clear today he is prioritizing politics over public safety.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\u201cSanctuary politicians like Ellison are the EXACT reason that DHS surged to Minnesota in the first place,\u201d McLaughlin added. \u201cIf he, [Gov.] Tim Walz, or Jacob Frey had just done their sworn duty to protect the people of Minnesota they are supposed to serve to root out fraud and get criminals off the street\u2014if they had worked with us to do it\u2014we wouldn\u2019t be having this conversation in the first place.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Minneapolis is a sanctuary city, meaning the city\u00a0does not\u00a0cooperate with federal immigration officials.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Trump\u2019s job is to protect the American people and enforce the law\u2014no matter who your mayor, governor, or state attorney general is,\u201d McLaughlin said.\n<\/p>\n

Noem announced Sunday that the Trump administration was sending hundreds more federal officers to Minneapolis to\u00a0join the\u00a0roughly 2,000\u00a0agents who were already sent to the state earlier this month.\n<\/p>\n

The new arrivals will \u201callow our ICE and our Border Patrol individuals that are working in Minneapolis to do so safely,\u201d Noem said on Fox News Sunday, adding that immigration enforcement operations will \u201ccontinue\u201d in the city despite protests and opposition from elected Democrat leaders.\n<\/p>\n

Anti-ICE protests have continued in Minneapolis since Wednesday, when an\u00a0agent\u00a0shot and killed\u00a0Renee Nicole Good, 37, who\u00a0appeared\u00a0to obstruct\u00a0immigration enforcement operations there.\n<\/p>\n
