The Hyde Amendment, a necessity in any health care deal for many Republicans, prohibits federal funding of elective abortions in health care appropriations.\n<\/p>\n<p>Though what has been released of the health plan contains no explicit mention of Hyde, the White House has promised to work with Congress on the \u201cstrongest possible pro-life protections.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear if those protections will take the form of the Hyde Amendment.\n<\/p>\n<p>The White House will be in \u201congoing conversations\u201d to help Congress \u201cwith specific language for the legislation,\u201d Mehmet Oz, administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, told reporters on a press call.\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">NEW: Though the president\u2019s new \u201cGreat Health Care Plan\u201d has no explicit mention of Hyde, a White House official told <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DailySignal?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@DailySignal<\/a> the WH will work with Congress to ensure the \u201cstrongest possible pro-life protections.\u201d https:\/\/t.co\/lesi6RIGaV\n<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elizabeth Troutman Mitchell (@TheElizMitchell) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheElizMitchell\/status\/2011896007169339676?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">January 15, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p>March for Life president, Jennie Lichter, expects the White House to keep this promise.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe American people don\u2019t want to see their tax dollars being used to pay for abortions. That\u2019s clear and consistent in polling over the years,\u201d she told The Daily Signal.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe the president and his team know that, and I anticipate that they will stand strong and consistent with his own first term and second term, first year actions to ensure that taxpayer dollars are not used to support health plans that provide abortions in the upcoming health care negotiations.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>But since many pro-lifers believe Hyde is the \u201cstrongest possible\u201d way to protect life, some are worried the absence of Hyde from the fact sheet means the White House will seek to limit abortion in a less effective way.\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The \u201cstrongest possible\u201d is the Hyde amendment which in statute bars tax payer funding of abortion. Anthony Pro-Life America, Marjorie Dannenfelser, wrote on X. \u201cVery simple to commit to, as most Hill GOP have. Unless \u2018flexible\u2019 means you can\u2019t.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Trump told House Republicans at their Members Retreat Tuesday they need to be a \u201clittle bit\u00a0flexible on Hyde\u201d\u00a0when making a deal with Democrats on health care. Many Republicans in Congress have said they will not support a health care deal without the policy in place to prevent federal subsidies from funding abortion coverage in health plans.\n<\/p>\n<p>But some White House officials have looked to\u00a0walk back that statement,\u00a0three sources familiar with the administration\u2019s thinking told The Daily Signal.\n<\/p>\n<p>Brad Kehr, government affairs director for American United for Life, recommended cautious optimistic about the White House\u2019s statement.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo American should be complicit in paying for the intentional termination of children in the womb,\u201d he said. \u201cConcerned taxpayers should be heartened by this WH statement, but closely review any bill text that comes from the proposal.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Part of the White House\u2019s plan, sending money to the American people rather than insurance companies, was previously suggested by several Republican senators, including Lousiana\u2019s Bill Cassidy and Idaho\u2019s Mike Crapo in one bill, and Florida\u2019s Rick Scott in another bill.\n<\/p>\n<p>In both proposals, Americans could access federal subsidies through health savings accounts, which they could in turn spend directly on eligible health-related expenses.\n<\/p>\n<p>Both legislative proposals included Hyde Amendment protections, prohibiting funding in the accounts to be spent on abortions.\n<\/p>\n<h4>What do you think of the President\u2019s Great Healthcare Plan?
