With her veil between my fingers, I adjusted the cascade of lace down her back. Our eyes locked, and while marveling at the beautiful bride before me, I saw my little girl.

I also saw Jesus in her reflection, and I stood in awe.

My heart lurched, knowing that this had been a slow goodbye and that the goal had always been to see Christ in her, holding her, and going with her. Though I would always be her mother, things would be different now.

The Bible gives us encouragement in situations like this. Isaiah 43:18-19 says, “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”

Maybe God is doing a new thing in your relationship with your daughter. Your role is changing, but you never stop learning how to be a better “girl mom.” Every day you are training for your future relationship.

Who You Are

You will always be her mom. You’ve always been her cheerleader. You’ve celebrated her milestones and been her biggest supporter. Your support is still vital even from the sidelines — sometimes silent, often less hands-on, yet always prayerful.

You will always be her safe place. You’ve always been the counselor and consultant, but now you’re learning to hold back when you want to fix a problem. Wait until she asks, and share wisdom with humility.

You will always be her prayer warrior. If there is ever a season to surrender your daughter to the Lord, it is when she leaves home. Your prayers are more powerful than your presence.

Who You Are Not

You are not in control of your adult daughter’s decisions or responsible for her mistakes. Your role is not to be a controller or fixer.

Mothers never forget every little snapshot taken and stored in their hearts. When it is time to release each girl and embrace every new role, you will forever have those memories. We are never really saying goodbye to our girls. We are carrying our love for them with us into a new season.

Mothers also have a front-row seat to the most beautiful love story: Our Creator God loves us and our daughters so much. Let’s not lose sight of the story He is writing. Right now is the time to praise the Lord for all He is doing and has done in our lives.

Father, it is easy to make change all about me. Help me to refocus my energy and emotions to rest in Your story. I need Your wisdom and peace when it is hard to remember You are in control. Protect and care for my girl as I release my grip little by little. Thank You for holding me — Your daughter — close in those moments. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

OUR FAVORITE THINGS

If you’ve ever wondered, Am I saying the right things to my daughter? … you’re not alone. Raising Daughters offers a simple, grace-filled path to having meaningful conversations that shape her faith, character, and future.
