{"id":18549,"date":"2026-02-11T12:23:42","date_gmt":"2026-02-11T12:23:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/biblelon.com\/?p=18549"},"modified":"2026-02-11T12:23:42","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T12:23:42","slug":"who-will-blink-first-in-dhs-shutdown-battle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/biblelon.com\/?p=18549","title":{"rendered":"Who Will Blink First in DHS Shutdown Battle?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n              <span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading Time:<\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 3<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>With a shutdown of the\u00a0Department of Homeland Security\u00a0looming at the end of the week, the Senate is not close to resolving fundamental disagreements on immigration law enforcement.\n<\/p>\n<h4>Join others crying out to the Lord day and night.<\/h4>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday,\u00a0Senate Majority Leader John Thune,\u00a0R-S.D., expressed openness to a new funding extension to provide time for talks between the White House, Senate Republicans, and Senate Democrats on how to get the votes to fund the department.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a work in progress, but I would hope that the Democrats here in the Senate<strong>\u2014<\/strong>if it takes more time, which I believe it will<strong>\u2014<\/strong>would be amenable to allowing us to get an extension \u2026 to allow more time for those negotiations to continue,\u201d said Thune.\n<\/p>\n<p>Democrats are demanding that Republicans agree to insert restraints on immigration law enforcement agents into a DHS funding bill, which was the product of bipartisan negotiation before the shooting deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.\n<\/p>\n<p>DHS is the only\u00a0discretionary\u00a0spending area that has not been covered for the rest of the fiscal year.\u00a0The department is currently running off of a short-term funding extension, which was meant to buy enough time for negotiations.\n<\/p>\n<p>Across the board, senators are pessimistic about a long-term deal materializing soon.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Democrats are not going to vote for the DHS bill because the Karen wing of their party wants to defund [Immigration and Customs Enforcement], like they wanted to defund the police,\u201d\u00a0Sen. John Kennedy,\u00a0R-La., told reporters Tuesday.\u00a0\u201cAnd they will punish my Democratic friends the rest of their natural lives if they vote for the DHS bill, which involves ICE.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy added that Republicans are also entirely uninterested in any proposal \u201cthat looks like it handcuffs ICE in doing their jobs\u201d and that Republicans would like to see a crackdown on sanctuary city policies included in any bipartisan deal.\n<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have asked for major policy concessions in exchange for their votes to fund DHS, such as a judicial warrant requirement for deportations, as well as a prohibition on operations in certain locations.\n<\/p>\n<p>Thus far, Democrats and Republicans do not have a deal. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and\u00a0House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries,\u00a0both D-N.Y., said in a Monday statement that Republicans\u2019 response to Democrat demands \u201cis both incomplete and insufficient in terms of addressing the concerns Americans have\u201d about ICE.\n<\/p>\n<p>As the\u00a0Coast Guard,\u00a0national disaster response teams, and cybersecurity infrastructure face an imminent dry-up of funding, senators are divided on whether another funding extension, or \u201ccontinuing resolution,\u201d is a possibility.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf cooler heads prevail and everybody takes their meds, we\u2019ll end up with a CR, a clean CR, that just extends the status quo, and that we can get [Transportation Security Administration] and Coast Guard and [Federal Emergency Management Agency] funding,\u201c said Kennedy.\n<\/p>\n<p>The budget reconciliation bill passed in July 2025 has already provided billions in funding for border security and deportation operations under DHS\u2019 umbrella.\n<\/p>\n<h4>Share your prayers and scriptures below.<\/h4>\n<p><em>This article was originally published at the Daily Signal.
