{"id":18823,"date":"2026-02-13T22:53:19","date_gmt":"2026-02-13T22:53:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/biblelon.com\/?p=18823"},"modified":"2026-02-13T22:53:19","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T22:53:19","slug":"thune-dhs-shutdown-very-likely","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/biblelon.com\/?p=18823","title":{"rendered":"THUNE: DHS Shutdown Very Likely"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n              <span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading Time:<\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader John Thune\u00a0announced that a shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security is likely when the clock strikes midnight on Friday, due to a lack of agreement with Democrats on funding the agency.\n<\/p>\n<h4>Visit your state page to pray.<\/h4>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have a solution yet,\u201d Thune, R-S.D., told reporters outside the Senate floor Thursday afternoon. \u201cThe Democrats, at least at the moment \u2026 have no interest in\u00a0funding the Department of Homeland Security.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Thune said leadership had been seeking unanimous consent to pass yet another funding extension for the department, but Democrats would not provide the votes.\n<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the week, funding from the current short-term stopgap funding extension will expire, leaving\u00a0the Coast Guard,\u00a0national disaster response teams, and cybersecurity infrastructure unfunded.\n<\/p>\n<p>The budget reconciliation bill passed in July 2025 has already provided billions in funding for border security and deportation operations under DHS\u2019 umbrella.\n<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have demanded restrictions on immigration law enforcement officers in the wake of the shooting deaths of Renee Good and\u00a0Alex Pretti\u00a0in Minneapolis.\n<\/p>\n<p>The White House and Senate Republicans have engaged with Senate Democrats\u2019 demands for concessions, such as\u00a0prohibiting mask use\u00a0and requiring judicial warrants for deportations.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe White House made, I think, what was a good faith effort \u2026 to try to get to an answer here \u2026 that will allow the government to stay open, and that was rejected by Democrats today,\u201d said Thune.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea of not even allowing us to have an extended amount of time to negotiate this suggests to me, at least, that there isn\u2019t a high level of interest in actually solving this issue.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Thune added that\u00a0the White House\u00a0had provided legislative text the night before to Democrats that attempted to address their concerns, but \u201cso far they\u2019re not getting any kind of response from Democrats, even allowing us to continue this and allow the government to stay open.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>The Senate will recess next week, but Thune says he has told senators to \u201cbe available to get back here if there\u2019s some sort of a deal they strike.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>On an optimistic note, Thune added, \u201cI\u2019m encouraged to hear that they [Democrats] are actually going to\u00a0put together \u2026 a counterproposal\u201d for DHS funding.\n<\/p>\n<h4>Share your prayers for the Department of Homeland Security below.<\/h4>\n<p><em>This article was originally published at the Daily Signal.
