FAVOR IS ONE OF THE MOST GRATIFYING THINGS IN LIFE. Whether we think of it as an attitude or an act, it\u2019s always a delightful gift. As an attitude, it\u2019s a gracious, kind, and friendly way of thinking about somebody else. And as an act, it\u2019s a deed that reflects such an attitude. When we \u201cdo a favor\u201d for someone, we do something that shows our \u201cfavor\u201d for them personally. And as Richard Steele suggests, a favor \u201cwell bestowed\u201d (with honesty and courtesy, for example) is \u201cas great an honor to him who confers it as to him who receives it.\u201d Favors, whether big or little, are a part of the grace of life. Without them, this world would be far more dreary.<\/p>\n
It would be a fine thing to develop \u201cfavor\u201d as a basic outlook or disposition. That is, it would help us to look on life itself more \u201cfavorably.\u201d Yes, some things have to be dealt with that cannot \u2014 and should not \u2014 be looked upon with favor. In fact, there are many such things, and it\u2019s foolish to pretend they don\u2019t exist. But there is also much good in this world, and we have an important choice to make: which one are we going to spend most of our time thinking about? When we\u2019re determining our inner inclination or orientation, I believe it\u2019s wise to be as favorable as possible.<\/em> Our choice can be to think and act as favorably toward others as wisdom will allow. And when the evidence is ambiguous, we can give people the benefit of the doubt. In other words, we can \u201cfavor\u201d the more positive scenario.<\/p>\n We have it within our power, every day of the week, to show kindness to other human beings, and by doing so, to show them favor. We can live in such a way that doing a favor is more than a random act we engage in \u2014 favor can be integral to who we are. It can be one of our principles, a part of the fabric of our character. When that\u2019s the case, we\u2019ll find ourselves bringing a welcome happiness into the lives of all who deal with us. And not only that, by having gratitude as a settled part of our character, we\u2019ll begin to appreciate how much favor others show to us, and even the ordinary affairs of daily living will be warmed with some colors that are quite wonderful.
