Sen. Josh Hawley\u00a0introduced\u00a0new legislation Wednesday\u00a0calling on\u00a0Congress to stand up against chemical abortion.\n<\/p>\n

Pro-life\u00a0advocates,\u00a0spiritual leaders,\u00a0lawyers, and women who took abortion pills gathered to share their\u00a0testimonies\u00a0on Capitol Hill at a press conference introducing the legislation.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are here today to issue a call to action, to call on the United States Congress to stand up and to protect the innocent unborn, to protect the health and safety of women whose lives are endangered by the\u00a0chemical abortion drug\u00a0known as\u00a0mifepristone,\u201d the Missouri Republican senator announced.\n<\/p>\n

Hawley said the bill, titled the Safeguarding Women from Chemical Abortion Act, will withdraw the FDA\u2019s approval of mifepristone,\u00a0prohibit the drug\u2019s manufacture or label as a pregnancy termination under the federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, and\u00a0allow women harmed by the pill to sue manufacturers for damages.\n<\/p>\n

It will not affect the drug\u2019s use for other treatments like for Cushing Syndrome.\n<\/p>\n

Hawley noted that the producer\u00a0and\u00a0distributor\u00a0of\u00a0mifepristone\u00a0is a\u00a0foreign\u00a0corporation, Danco\u00a0Laboratories. The\u00a0pharmaceutical\u00a0producer, based in the Cayman Islands, imports the medication from Spain and China, then sends it to the United States.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re also here to call on Congress to stand up to the greedy foreign corporations who are making billions of dollars in profits by endangering\u00a0women\u2019s health\u00a0and shipping to them a drug that they know is dangerous, that they know will cause the most devastating health effects, and they do it anyway, because profit for them comes before people,\u201d Hawley said. \u201cIt\u2019s time for Congress to take action.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Speakers at the event highlighted the danger of the drug.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cA major study of 875,000 mifepristone prescriptions drawn from insurance claim data was published showing that in fully 11% of cases, women who take the drug mifepristone for use in an abortion experience a serious adverse health event,\u201d said Hawley.\n<\/p>\n

Hawley acknowledged that the legislation will be\u00a0difficult to\u00a0pass through the Senate.\u00a0\u201cMy view is, I\u2019m going to work with my colleagues. My hope is to\u00a0get 60 votes. I know it will take persuading people, moving hearts and minds, but that\u2019s what we\u2019re here to do. That\u2019s the mission that we are embarking upon.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Hawley\u2019s bill has a House companion,\u00a0sponsored by Rep. Diana Harshbarger, R-Tenn.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a pharmacist, I believe every drug approved in the United States must meet the highest standards of safety, transparency, and medical oversight,\u201d Harshbarger said.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThe FDA under previous administrations has steadily dismantled critical safety safeguards surrounding the abortion drug mifepristone\u2014removing in-person dispensing requirements, allowing the drug to be shipped through the mail, and limiting adverse-event reporting so that most serious complications are no longer tracked,\u201d she\u00a0continued.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cEvidence now suggests that the real-world risks to women are far greater than the federal government has acknowledged.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

A foreign company\u2014Danco Laboratories\u2014has made so much money selling Mifepristone, \u201cit is the only drug they make.\u201d @hawleymo<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

And they falsely state the risks to women. It\u2019s \u201c22X higher\u201d than what is on the label.\n<\/p>\n
