The main reason for this is that Iran has effectively closed down the Strait of Hormuz, a key chokepoint in global oil trade. Recently, however, President Trump called on NATO to defend the Strait, warning that the organization may face a \u201cvery bad\u201d future if it refuses.\n<\/p>\n<h4>Do you want state prayer alerts?<\/h4>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>From Fox News:\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">\u201cIt\u2019s only appropriate that people who are the beneficiaries of the strait will help to make sure that nothing bad happens there,\u201d Trump\u00a0told The Financial Times\u00a0in an interview Sunday. \u201cIf there\u2019s no response, or if it\u2019s a negative response, I think it will be very bad for the future of NATO.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Trump echoed those remarks in a press gaggle aboard Air Force One on Sunday night, returning to Washington, D.C., from a weekend at Mar-a-Lago, saying it would \u201cbe nice to have\u00a0other countries police that with us,\u00a0and we\u2019ll help \u2013 we\u2019ll\u00a0work militarily.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\n<\/p>\n<p>Trump is looking for NATO allies\u2019 assistance in\u00a0securing the oil tanker traffic\u00a0through the Strait of Hormuz for the rest of the world. Trump administration officials have been repeating throughout the choking of the strait that the U.S. under Trump is a net exporter of oil and gets only a fraction of its oil from the Middle East \u2013 unlike the rest of the world, including NATO allies.<\/p>\n<p>Despite his threat of a \u201cvery bad \u2026 future,\u201d the President is reportedly optimistic that NATO will help. He told reporters, \u201cWe are talking to other countries about working with us about the policing of the strait, and I think we\u2019re getting a good response.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>President Trump has been laser-focused on holiday NATO accountable during his second term. Earlier, he pressured the organization into spending 5% of GDP in defense spending, as Fox notes.
