Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, recently landed herself in a social media debate over the death penalty.<\/p>\n
It all started when Hawkins\u00a0posted\u00a0the following message on X on Feb. 24: \u201cThe death penalty is inconsistent with a pro-life worldview.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cEven if you feel that the death penalty is justified in some circumstances, I don\u2019t think we should be gleeful about it,\u201d she told CBN News. \u201cI don\u2019t think we should be flippant about prescribing the death penalty because we have to ask ourselves what \u2026 has been the argument for the death penalty. It\u2019s to protect society, right? It\u2019s to say, \u2018These people have done something so heinous they\u2019re such a menace and danger to our society, that, in order to save our society, protect our children, we must put them to death.’\u201d<\/p>\n
Hawkins continued, \u201cAnd that\u2019s not where we\u2019re at. A woman who seeks abortion, who does engage in the sin of abortion \u2014 which is an act of killing 100% \u2014 the question I have to ask myself is: Is prescribing her the death penalty and saying she should receive the death penalty, is that going to save her soul?\u201d<\/p>\n
Considering \u201cevery human is made in the image of God,\u201d Hawkins believes it\u2019s important for the pro-life community to truly consider these words.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s no caveat to that,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s not every human being is made in the image of God if they\u2019re innocent or if they\u2019re sinless. Every human being, even the worst sinners of them all, were made in the image of God.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ultimately, Hawkins pondered whether it\u2019s possible to punish others without becoming \u201ckillers ourselves.\u201d She said her biggest issue with the debate centers on the flippancy with which some approach the issue.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s no mercy,\u201d she said. \u201cThere\u2019s no conversation \u2026 The hardest commandment is when Christ calls us to love our enemies.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hawkins said people should ponder how to get someone \u2014 even a person who has harmed themselves or their family \u2014 to a place of seeing redemption. She argued the death penalty closes the door on allowing people to change their minds and seek Jesus.<\/p>\n
\u201cExecution \u2026 permanently ends for all eternity that possibility of repentance,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd so I think it\u2019s hard to, like, claim that we love our enemies, that we\u2019re fulfilling this commandment that Christ has given us, while also being flippant and gleeful online, insisting that so many must die.\u201d<\/p>\n

X user SmythRadio\u00a0responded: \u201cImposing the death penalty on those proven to have intentionally taken the life of an innocent human is the most pro-life position possible.\u201d<\/p>\n Others shared a similar sentiment.<\/p>\n \u201cGod is pro-life and he commands evildoers to be punished by death,\u201d Kat Kanada\u00a0wrote. \u201cTo be pro-life means to protect the innocent and punish the guilty.
