(THE HILL) \u2013 The Trump administration has opened investigations into three medical schools, saying it has concerns about potential race-based discrimination in admissions.\n<\/p>\n

Stanford University, the Ohio State University and the University of California San Diego received letters Wednesday demanding seven years of data around applicants\u2019 race, standardized test scores, relations to donors, zip codes and other educational information.\n<\/p>\n

The Trump administration also wants documents relating to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in admissions and other university communications regarding race, donor status and other information gathered in the admissions process.\n<\/p>\n

The schools were given until April 24 to turn over the data.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cAt this time, our investigation will focus on possible race discrimination in medical school admissions at Ohio State University College of Medicine,\u201d the letter to that school reads.\n<\/p>\n

Ohio State said it will \u201crespond appropriately\u201d to the letter and the university is \u201cfully compliant with all state and federal regulations and legal rulings regarding admissions.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\u201cUC San Diego was notified yesterday that the Department of Justice is commencing an investigation, and we are reviewing the notice. UC San Diego is committed to fair processes in all of our programs and activities, including admissions, consistent with federal and state anti-discrimination laws,\u201d the university wrote.\n<\/p>\n

Stanford University said \u201cwe are reviewing the letter and will respond appropriately. Stanford School of Medicine prohibits unlawful discrimination on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

The Trump administration has gone full steam ahead with efforts to obtain admissions data from universities, laying out concerns colleges are using racial proxies and other methods to get around the 2023 Supreme Court ruling banning affirmative action.\n<\/p>\n

In deals with universities the Trump administration pulled funding from last year, many included provisions to give over admissions data or change admissions policies to match what the federal government wanted to see.\n<\/p>\n

More recently, the Trump administration was\u00a0fighting in court\u00a0after 17 Democratic states sued to stop the collection of admissions data from their institutions.\n<\/p>\n
