A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.” Deuteronomy 32:4 (NIV)

Have you ever felt so abandoned, disappointed, or overwhelmed by a situation that you blamed God?

Maybe you cried out for help, wondering if every prayer just bounced off a hard heavenly surface and slipped away into the abyss. Nothing seemed to work, and the more you cried out, the more twisted in knots you became. All you longed for was a soft place to land — loving arms that would bring comfort to the war raging inside you.

I’ve been there too. For several years, I walked through a dark season, a desperate and lonely place. I had long been praying and believing for a miracle in the life of a family member. But the more I prayed for change, the worse things seemed to get.

In survival mode, I struggled to trust God. I became anxious, exhausted, paralyzed with fear, and unable to shake the feeling of dread. At my breaking point, I felt like giving up.

Sinking onto the cold floor, I threw my fist up at God and accused Him: You are unfaithful. I thought You would take care of my family. I feel like You’ve failed me, and I’m angry with You.

As I wept, feeling worse than ever before, I felt like I heard a still, small voice in my heart: Alex, you can’t say I am unfaithful — because I’m not finished yet. The story is not finished.

I realized the Holy Spirit was speaking truth to my heart and mind. Even though my situation didn’t turn around in that moment, I felt the comfort and ministry of His love. I also realized I had tried to make a deal with God, and in doing so, I set myself up with an expectation I felt He was not meeting.

Many of us do this. We put timelines on God and expect Him to work on our terms. We make deals He never agreed to in the first place. Then when things don’t work out as we want them to, we blame God. We think He is unfaithful and unjust, but that isn’t true. We can’t lower the nature of God to our human experience. Deuteronomy 32:4 says, “He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.”

God is never wrong. His ways are not our ways, and His thoughts are not our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9). A situation may be bad, but that doesn’t mean God’s character is bad. There are seasons we walk through that are not good, but God’s character is always good. He cannot be anything else. His faithfulness is tied to His goodness, even if the circumstances in our lives try to dictate otherwise.

Dear Lord, I know You are faithful to complete what You started, so please bring a miracle into my situation. Help me to get out of the way. I choose to posture my prayers in faith, not fear. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

OUR FAVORITE THINGS

In The Divine Counselor, Pastor Alex Seeley introduces readers to the best therapist they’ll ever meet: the Holy Spirit.

ENGAGE

You can find Pastor Alex on Instagram @alexseeley, online at alexseeley.com, or hear her latest sermons at https://thebelonging.co/messages/.

Enter to WIN your very own copy of The Divine Counselor by Alex Seeley.
