Late-night TV host Jimmy Kimmel is under fire after an assassination attempt against President Donald Trump ignited debate over one of Kimmel\u2019s recent jokes.<\/p>\n
The drama ignited after Cole Tomas Allen was arrested for reportedly trying to charge through a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner on Saturday. He has\u00a0since been charged\u00a0with the attempted assassination of the president, among other charges.<\/p>\n
Frustration immediately began brewing around Kimmel, who had delivered a mock roast last Thursday night during \u201cJimmy Kimmel Live!\u201d in anticipation of Saturday\u2019s dinner.\u00a0During it, Kimmel said First Lady Melania Trump had a \u201cglow like an expectant widow.\u201d<\/p>\n
Listen to the latest\u00a0episode\u00a0of \u201cQuick Start\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n While some interpreted Kimmel’s\u00a0monologue as an inappropriate statement that could inspire political violence, Kimmel has since said the quip was about the Trumps\u2019 \u201cage difference.\u201d Both the first lady and the president have since called for the comedian to be fired.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was not by any stretch of the definition a call to assassination,\u201d Kimmel\u00a0responded\u00a0on Monday. \u201cAnd they know that. I\u2019ve been very vocal for many years speaking out against gun violence in particular.\u201d<\/p>\n Not everyone is buying these claims, though. In fact, National Religious Broadcasters (NRB), a nonpartisan association of Christian communicators, filed a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requesting an investigation into ABC Television over Kimmel\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n Troy Miller, CEO and president of NRB, told CBN News why he and NRB found the comments to be, at the very least, beyond the pale.<\/p>\n \u201c[Kimmel] makes this comment about [Melania Trump] being an expected widow \u2026 this to a woman whose husband, the president of the United States, has had two assassination attempts on his life,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd, so, at the minimum, you could say this joke was \u2026 disrespectful to the first lady and to the office, but I think we all know, at the worst of it \u2026 these kinds of jokes really do incite violence out there in our culture today.\u201d<\/p>\n Miller said NRB is known for defending freedom of speech and religion, but he said there are \u201cboundaries\u201d to which people must adhere.<\/p>\n \u201cYou can\u2019t walk into a movie theater and yell, \u2018Fire,’\u201d he said. \u201cYou can\u2019t incite violence, and that\u2019s clearly written into the Federal Communications Code and into the law.\u201d<\/p>\n Miller continued, \u201cSo, I consulted with our general counsel, Mike Farris. \u2026 We looked at the footage over and over again, and we decided that really Jimmy Kimmel crossed that line, and so we put a complaint into the FCC asking them to investigate this under those guidelines.\u201d<\/p>\n With assassination attempts \u2014 and the murder of conservative and Christian activist Charlie Kirk \u2014 Miller said the FCC must take such language seriously.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re hoping that, first of all, that they\u2019ll do the investigation, they\u2019ll look into this,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd, then, if it meets the criteria of speech that was inciting violence, ABC and Jimmy Kimmel should pay a price for this.\u201d<\/p>\n As for Kimmel\u2019s response that he was telling an age-gap joke and nothing more, Miller isn\u2019t convinced.
