{"id":28130,"date":"2026-05-04T10:23:03","date_gmt":"2026-05-04T10:23:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/biblelon.com\/?p=28130"},"modified":"2026-05-04T10:23:03","modified_gmt":"2026-05-04T10:23:03","slug":"georgia-gop-could-move-toward-redistricting-top-officials-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/biblelon.com\/?p=28130","title":{"rendered":"Georgia GOP Could Move Toward Redistricting, Top Officials Say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n              <span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading Time:<\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>After the U.S.\u00a0Supreme Court\u00a0on Wednesday struck down Louisiana\u2019s proposed congressional map for relying too heavily on race, Georgia Republican leaders signaled renewed interest in redrawing the state\u2019s own congressional districts\u2014raising the prospect of expanding the GOP\u2019s delegation.\n<\/p>\n<h4>This content is supported by your donations.<br \/>Give today.<\/h4>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese new maps must prioritize traditional redistricting principles\u2014contiguity, compactness, respect for political subdivisions, and communities of interest\u2014without the distorting influence of\u00a0racial targets,\u201d Georgia Republican Party Chairman Josh McKoon\u00a0wrote in a statement.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe stand ready to support swift action that advances fair representation and upholds the equal protection guarantees of the 14th Amendment. This is a win for democracy, the rule of law, and all Georgians,\u201d he added.\n<\/p>\n<p>Georgia\u00a0Democrats\u00a0currently hold four of the state\u2019s 14 congressional seats.\n<\/p>\n<p>Other Republican leaders echoed McKoon\u2019s remarks, calling GOP\u2011friendly redistricting \u201clong overdue.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[This is a] long\u2011overdue win for every southern state forced to bend the knee to federal courts on redistricting,\u201d Burt Jones, former state Senate president pro tempore and current lieutenant governor candidate,\u00a0wrote<span class=\"screen-reader-text\">opens in a new tab<\/span>, describing the Supreme Court\u2019s decision as a \u201cvictory for common sense.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>In the Louisiana case, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito wrote for the court that the Voting Rights Act did not require the state to create an additional majority\u2011minority district.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the Voting Rights Act did not require Louisiana to create an additional majority\u2011minority district, no compelling interest justified the state\u2019s use of race in creating SB8,\u201d Alito wrote. \u201cThat map\u00a0is an unconstitutional gerrymander, and its use would violate the plaintiffs\u2019 constitutional rights.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Former Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan, now a Republican candidate for governor, said Georgia GOP leaders are pushing for a special legislative session to adopt a new congressional map.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re saying it out loud\u2014they\u2019re saying redraw these districts,\u201d Duncan\u00a0told local media<span class=\"screen-reader-text\">opens in a new tab<\/span>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGeorgians deserve districts that unite neighbors, preserve local communities, and ensure every vote counts equally,\u201d Duncan added.\n<\/p>\n<p>Despite Republican enthusiasm, Gov.\u00a0Brian Kemp\u00a0has suggested that any new map would not take effect before the 2026 midterm elections\u2014a timeline GOP leaders worry could jeopardize their narrow House majority.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s clear that [Louisiana v.
