The Federal Bureau of Investigation<\/span><\/span> has reportedly launched an investigation into possible leaks of classified information tied to Democrats or Democrat staff members on the Senate Intelligence Committee. The probe stems in part from a criminal referral made by the National Security Agency<\/span><\/span> regarding the alleged leaking of sensitive intelligence information during Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard<\/span><\/span>\u2019s confirmation process.\n<\/p>\n

The NSA made the referral last summer concerning reports, including one in The New York Times, earlier that year during Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard\u2019s confirmation process that quoted information from an intercept of two Hezbollah terrorist figures who claimed Gabbard, during a 2017 trip to Syria, had met with the \u201cbig guy.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

The Times suggested the reference was taken by some to mean Gabbard had met with a top Hezbollah terrorist leader, a claim she adamantly denied.\n<\/p>\n

NSA concluded the leak accurately contained information from one of its intercepts but that Gabbard had not in fact met with Hezbollah leaders.\n<\/p>\n

According to the report, the NSA identified potential leakers among Senate Intelligence Committee Democrat staff members who had access to the classified intercept before the information appeared in media reports. However, the referral reportedly sat dormant inside the Justice Department for months before FBI Director Kash Patel<\/span><\/span> was alerted to its existence several weeks ago.\n<\/p>\n

Since then, FBI counterintelligence and criminal investigators have reportedly expanded the probe to examine additional potential leaks and media contacts connected to committee Democrats. The investigation is part of a broader Trump administration effort to crack down on the leaking of classified information and the politicization of intelligence.\n<\/p>\n

The Senate Intelligence Committee has faced scrutiny over leaks before. In 2018, former Senate Intelligence Committee security director James Wolfe pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI during an investigation into leaks involving nonpublic information shared with reporters. That case intensified concerns about how classified information is handled within some of Washington\u2019s most sensitive intelligence circles.\n<\/p>\n
