The state of Texas announced a lawsuit against streaming giant Netflix on Monday, accusing the company of spying on children and other consumers by collecting their data without consent and designing the platform to be addictive.\n<\/p>\n

Texas claims that Netflix has falsely represented to consumers that it didn\u2019t collect or share user data while it actually tracked and sold viewers\u2019 habits and preferences to commercial data brokers and advertising technology companies.\n<\/p>\n

The lawsuit, filed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, claims that \u201cNetflix\u2019s endgame is simple and lucrative: get children and families glued to the screen, harvest their data while they are stuck there, and then monetize the data for a handsome profit.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

According to the lawsuit, Netflix allegedly used \u201cdark patterns\u201d \u2014 manipulative design features intended to keep users watching for longer periods of time. One feature specifically mentioned is autoplay, which automatically starts new content after a show ends. Texas officials argue these practices are especially concerning when directed toward children and families, as they may encourage excessive screen time while allowing the company to gather additional personal data.\n<\/p>\n

Attorney General Paxton stated that Netflix created a \u201csurveillance program\u201d designed to illegally profit from Texans\u2019 personal information without consent. The lawsuit seeks to stop the alleged collection and disclosure of user data, disable autoplay by default on children\u2019s profiles, and impose civil penalties under Texas\u2019 Deceptive Trade Practices Act. Netflix has not yet publicly responded to the allegations.\n<\/p>\n
