Alabama Republicans argue the court is improperly interfering with the state’s ability to draw its own congressional districts, while opponents claim the GOP-backed map unfairly diluted Black voting power in violation of the Voting Rights Act.

The three-judge panel said it could not allow voters to cast ballots under what it described as a map “tainted by intentional race-based discrimination.” Republicans, however, remain confident the Supreme Court will ultimately side with the state. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall vowed to continue the fight, saying victory is only a matter of time.

The dispute comes as redistricting battles intensify nationwide ahead of the midterms, with both parties seeking every possible advantage in a narrowly divided Congress. Alabama’s delayed primaries in several districts underscore how deeply these court fights are already impacting election administration and voter confidence.

How should states balance fair representation, voting rights protections, and constitutional authority in redistricting?
