The Department of Housing and Urban Development under\u00a0President Donald Trump\u00a0announced an \u201cimmediate suspension\u201d on all funding to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, citing a \u201cclear pattern of fraud.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\u201cYear after year, hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars were funneled to LAHSA with little accountability,\u201d HUD Secretary Scott Turner said in a\u00a0statement Thursday. \u201cMeanwhile,\u00a0homelessness skyrocketed. Taxpayers will no longer bankroll an organization that puts its own self-interests ahead of the Americans it was created to serve.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

The\u00a0New York Post reported\u00a0in March that taxpayers are paying up to $1.5 million per homeless person in\u00a0Los Angeles. This amount is nearly eight times larger than the average 50-year-old\u2019s retirement fund and more than 20 times larger than the average 35- to 39-year-old\u2019s retirement fund, per\u00a0Fidelity Investments reporting.\n<\/p>\n

While much of these funds are sourced from the city and county of LA, nearly $1 billion in federal taxpayer dollars have gone toward LAHSA since 2021.\n<\/p>\n

Despite this,\u00a0homelessness in LA\u00a0has doubled since 2013.\n<\/p>\n

The HUD press release cites multiple instances that the agency claims \u201cestablish a clear\u00a0pattern of fraud,\u201d including poor financial management and internal controls, conflicts of interest, and false certifications and statements.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring\u00a0a\u00a02025 assessment, LAHSA\u00a0failed to\u00a0provide documentation to verify the existence of\u00a0nearly 2,300\u00a0housing sites for which it was responsible,\u201d the press release said. \u201cThe agency\u2019s former CEO resigned after she and LAHSA violated federal conflict-of-interest rules by committing more than $2 million in federal funds under LAHSA\u2019s control to her husband\u2019s employer.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Despite the increase in homelessness, some of the LAHSA shelters remain merely half-full, the letter states.\n<\/p>\n

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass\u00a0criticized the Trump administration\u2019s move to defund LAHSA. While she admitted she had concerns about the agency, she stated that these federal cuts do \u201cnothing to house people.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\u201cUltimately, people will lose their lives,\u201d Bass claimed.\n<\/p>\n

The letter, however, states that the agency \u201ccannot ignore\u201d the blatant fraud.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cTurning over billions of dollars from American taxpayers to an organization under investigation and suspected of gross misuse of federal funding and \u2018obvious fraud\u2019 does nothing to reduce homelessness,\u201d the letter states. \u201cIndeed, diverting dollars from worthy programs to LAHSA merely makes the homeless crisis worse.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
