After the House failed to negotiate reforms and pass an extension, members departed for a 12-day recess.\n<\/p>\n<h4>This content is supported by your donations.<br \/>Give today.<\/h4>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Section 702 of the\u00a0Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act\u00a0will expire at midnight on Friday after Congress failed to reach an agreement on warrantless searches. FISA currently grants the federal government authority to surveil foreigners without a warrant, but conservatives, fighting for reforms, argue that it can be used to spy on Americans and collect data.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The extension bill failed Thursday night, 198-218, with 19 conservative hawks joining 199 Democrats voting against it. Though both groups were opposed to the legislation, it was for very different reasons.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., says there\u2019s no point in trying to stay in Washington to attempt another vote.\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">199 Democrats voted AGAINST a clean three week extension of the FISA National Security Law for political purposes.\n<\/p>\n<p>When the bill went down, they APPLAUDED.\n<\/p>\n<p>They are willing to JEOPARDIZE the safety and the security of the American people to make a cheap political point.\n<\/p>\n<p>I pray\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/36AV70MZMt\">pic.twitter.com\/36AV70MZMt<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Speaker Mike Johnson (@SpeakerJohnson) June 11, 2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJust now, I attempted to pass a short-term extension for three weeks, a clean extension, no changes to the law, just to make sure that the people are not subjected to great harm, and the Democrats\u2014199 of them\u2014voted against it and applauded themselves as they left the building,\u201d Johnson said.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat would be the point of me going through this exercise over and over? The House has done every single thing.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Reps. Andrew Clyde, R-Ga., and Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., both members of the House Freedom Caucus, the government collects hundreds of millions of international communications every year.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem, the two lawmakers said in a\u00a0recent op-ed, is that the CIA, FBI, and the National Security Agency are able to specifically search through information to find American communications. \u201cThis backdoor search inverts the \u2018foreign\u2019 part of FISA,\u201d they wrote.\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">We take an oath to uphold the Constitution. The surveillance FISA allows includes extensive counterterrorism efforts for the FIFA World Cup, America 250, and increasing global terror threats\u2014vulnerable situations the White House sees as essential. However, House Republicans are blaming President Donald Trump for muddying delicate negotiations.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Tulsi Gabbard resigned her seat as director of national intelligence, Trump tapped Bill Pulte, a housing official with no intelligence background. Democrat leadership agreed that no matter what aspect of FISA is on the table, it should not be overseen by Pulte.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter what else they do; Pulte has got to be gone,\u201d Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said.\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">FISA is set to expire today\u2014but what does that mean for our national security and Americans\u2019 privacy?\ud83e\uddf5\n<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 House Freedom Caucus (@freedomcaucus) June 12, 2026<\/p>\n<p>However, on Thursday,\u00a0Trump nominated Jay Clayton, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, for the position. Clayton was formerly chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission and the head of the law firm Sullivan &amp; Cromwell.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFew people anywhere in the legal community are respected at the level of Jay,\u201d Trump said on Truth Social. \u201cI encourage the United States Senate to confirm Jay as soon as possible.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clayton is someone Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., says he can confirm \u201cfairly quickly.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t know what realistic is, but we\u2019re going to probe the limits of it,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Senate Intelligence Committee, chaired by Sen.
