It also marks the apparent conclusion of a conflict that has dominated international headlines since late February.

From Just the News:

“The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “Congratulations to all! I hereby fully authorize the toll-free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade. Ships of the World, start your engines.”

Trump said the U.S. Navy would immediately end the blockade of the strait, which it maintained for several weeks in response to Iranian interdiction of oil tankers.

Other details about the deal were not available as of Sunday evening including those on a key sticking point – whether Iran will wind down its nuclear enrichment program.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most strategically important waterways, with roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies passing through it. Throughout the conflict, disruptions to shipping traffic contributed to concerns about energy prices and economic stability. Markets will likely be watching closely to see whether maritime commerce resumes uninterrupted in the coming days.

The conflict began on February 28 with joint U.S.-Israeli military operations targeting Iran. President Trump repeatedly stated that the campaign’s objectives were to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, degrade its missile and naval capabilities, and limit its ability to support terrorist proxy groups throughout the region. The conflict expanded beyond Iran itself, with fighting involving Israel, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and various regional actors.

However, one of the major unanswered questions surrounding the agreement remains Iran’s nuclear program. While Trump declared the deal complete, no public details have yet been released regarding uranium enrichment or long-term verification measures. Those issues were among the central reasons the conflict began and could prove critical to the agreement’s durability.

Sharif also said Sunday that a signing ceremony would occur on Friday. Pakistan was a critical mediator in negotiating the original ceasefire agreement, which managed to hold despite intermittent bouts of live-fire attacks by nearly every combatant faction.

“With the agreement now in place, mediators will facilitate a series of meetings this week,” he also said. “These pre-implementation discussions will lay the foundation for the technical talks and the official signing ceremony.”

The deal and the Friday signing ceremony already represent something of a moved goal post, considering Trump previously stated that the signing ceremony would take place Sunday and insisted upon that timetable until early Sunday afternoon.

Questions also remain about how Israel will respond to the agreement. Fighting in Lebanon was a frequent point of contention during negotiations, and President Trump publicly criticized Israeli military actions on multiple occasions, arguing that continued strikes could jeopardize peace efforts. Those disagreements created unusual tensions between Washington and Jerusalem during the conflict.

The prospect of peace in the Middle East is always a matter for prayer. While political agreements can reduce violence and create opportunities for stability, lasting peace ultimately comes from transformed hearts and wise leadership. Let’s pray that any agreement reached would protect innocent lives, restrain terrorism, prevent nuclear proliferation, and create conditions where the Gospel can continue to advance throughout the region.

How are you praying for peace in the Middle East?
