In a\u00a0decision\u00a0released Tuesday morning in the case of\u00a0Trump v. Barbara<\/em>, the high court ruled that a Trump executive order signed on his first day back in the White House last year, limiting birthright citizenship, is unconstitutional.\n<\/p>\n Chief Justice John Roberts authored the majority opinion, joined by justices Sonia Sotomayor, Amy Coney Barrett, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson.\n<\/p>\n Roberts cited the Citizenship Clause of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, which says that \u201c[a]ll persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.\u201d<\/p>\n The ruling on birthright citizenship drew sharp disagreement among the justices, with the majority concluding that the Fourteenth Amendment protects automatic citizenship for children born in the United States, while the dissent argued that the amendment has been interpreted too broadly. The decision preserves longstanding precedent and blocks President Trump\u2019s executive order from taking effect.\n<\/p>\n In a separate opinion released the same day, the Court addressed another high-profile issue involving state authority and the meaning of federal law.\n<\/p>\n From The Christian Post:\n<\/p>\n The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that states have the authority to prohibit males who identify as females from participating in girls\u2019 and women\u2019s sporting competitions, saying such policies do not violate Title IX civil rights antidiscrimination law.\n<\/p>\n \u2026\n<\/p>\n Justice Brett Kavanaugh authored the majority opinion, being joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and justices Amy Coney Barrett, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch and Samuel Alito.\n<\/p>\n \u201cThe question before the Court is: Under Title IX and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, may schools maintain women\u2019s and girls\u2019 sports for biological females?\u201d wrote Kavanaugh.<\/p>\n The Court went on to conclude that Title IX\u2019s reference to sex is grounded in biological reality and that separate athletic teams for males and females remain lawful. The decision upholds laws passed in West Virginia and Idaho and is expected to influence similar statutes enacted in many other states.\n<\/p>\n Taken together, Tuesday\u2019s rulings illustrate the Supreme Court\u2019s central role in resolving questions about constitutional rights, federal authority, and the meaning of existing law.
