Professional magician Dustin Tavella is known for captivating audiences with his craft. But the \u201cAmerica\u2019s Got Talent\u201d winner is also an outspoken Christian who shares his faith with fans.<\/p>\n
Listen to the latest\u00a0episode\u00a0of \u201cQuick Start\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n Tavella told CBN News his love for magic tricks started at an early age when he would attend various shows and started learning how to perform different tricks. As he grew older, he stopped playing and performing, and it wasn\u2019t until a friend decades later performed magic tricks one day that Tavella \u2014 then an adult \u2014 rediscovered his love for the craft.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re at a coffee shop one day and [my friend] just busted out a deck of cards, and some coins, and, man, it was like all of a sudden there\u2019s all these people around, different ages, different skin colors, different backgrounds,\u201d Tavella said. \u201cAnd I was like, this one simple thing\u2019s brought all these people together because I watched them become like children in that moment.\u201d<\/p>\n For some reason, this simple moment was like a \u201cbombing off\u201d in Tavella\u2019s heart, leading him to once again start remembering his love for magic tricks.<\/p>\n \u201cI felt like God was like highlighting this,\u201d he said. \u201cSo I went home and told my wife. I was like, \u2018Babe, I\u2019m a magician now.\u2019 Like, that\u2019s what every wife wants to hear, right?\u201d<\/p>\n Rather than denigrate his plans or diminish them, his wife dove all in and \u201ctook it serious.\u201d She said she also received a word from the Lord on the matter.<\/p>\n \u201cShe went on a run one day and was praying and she was like, \u2018I don\u2019t know why this sounds crazy, but I feel like God just told me you\u2019re gonna win \u2018America\u2019s Got Talent\u2019 doing these magic tricks and stuff,’\u201d Tavella recalled, noting the information was wild at the time considering he had never even sought after going on the show. \u201cIt was crazy. I was like, \u2018I\u2019m not even gonna get on the show, let alone win this show.\u2019 But my wife\u2019s always right.\u201d<\/p>\n Tavella, who was running a homeless ministry at the time, truly didn\u2019t think he\u2019d get on the show let alone win. But God had other plans. Two and a half years after his wife felt God\u2019s prompting, Tavella made it on \u201cAmerica\u2019s Got Talent\u201d \u2014 and won, an experience that catapulted his career and proved the message his wife received to be true.<\/p>\n The popular magician also shared his path to Christianity, noting his parents\u2019 marriage was \u201cin shambles\u201d when he was a child.<\/p>\n \u201cJust drugs, alcohol, affairs. My dad was a drug dealer,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s how my parents met. Her friend \u2026 used to pick up drugs from my dad, and the beginning of my life, my parents were just complete dysfunction.\u201d<\/p>\n But Tavella said they came to the Lord because there was a Christian couple who came into their life, and helped them get back on their feet and get sober. Suddenly, drugs, chaos, and furor were replaced with the Lord.<\/p>\n \u201cAs I was growing up, I was watching my parents grow with the Lord,\u201d he said. \u201cI was watching, like, as all this nonsense was eliminated from our family, I was like, \u2018This is crazy.\u2019 So by the time I got to the age where a lot of my friends were wanting to party and sleep around and all this stuff, I was like, \u2018I don\u2019t want anything to do with this, man.’\u201d<\/p>\n Ultimately, Tavella believes this was all \u201cGod\u2019s protection\u201d to hold him back from the chaos that had plagued his family for far too long.
