If he steps aside before the July 13 deadline, state party leaders will have just two weeks to select a new nominee to challenge incumbent Republican Sen. Susan Collins in November.

Our Monthly Ministry Partners are the lifeblood of IFA.
Join today.

From Fox News:

Under Maine law, if Platner formally withdraws as the Democratic nominee by 5 p.m. on July 13, the Maine Democratic Party can replace him on the general election ballot by selecting a new nominee through its party process, with the replacement required to be chosen by July 27.

…

Platner’s campaign, the New York Post reported, is deliberating about potentially dropping out, but that any potential replacement would need to align with the same political platform as Platner.

…

State law does not require a new primary election or specify how the replacement must be chosen, leaving the process to the Maine Democratic Party’s internal rules. Party leaders said in a Monday press release that they intend to use an open and inclusive process, though they have not yet announced exactly how a replacement would be selected.

Should Platner exit the race, several prominent Democrats are being discussed as possible replacements. Former State Senate President Troy Jackson, who recently finished third in the Democratic gubernatorial primary, has already expressed interest and filed paperwork to explore a Senate campaign. Former gubernatorial candidate Dr. Nirav Shah, who previously led Maine’s CDC and later served in the Biden administration’s CDC leadership, is also considering a run after receiving encouragement from supporters. Meanwhile, Rep. Jared Golden, a moderate Democrat representing Maine’s rural 2nd Congressional District, has publicly distanced himself from speculation that he will enter the race despite his statewide profile.

Other potential candidates include Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, who drew national attention for attempting to remove President Donald Trump from Maine’s 2024 ballot and has called on Platner to withdraw if the allegations are true. Former Governor Janet Mills, who suspended her Senate campaign earlier this year but still received nearly one-fifth of the primary vote, has also been mentioned as a possibility. Additional names include former House Speaker Sara Gideon, who lost to Sen. Collins in 2020; Angus King III, son of Sen. Angus King; former congressional candidate Jordan Wood; social worker Paige Loud; former Senate candidate David Costello; and Maine Beer Company co-founder Dan Kleban, all of whom have either expressed interest or have been floated by party insiders.

The allegations against Platner have created uncertainty in one of the nation’s most closely watched Senate races. If he withdraws, Maine Democrats will have little time to unite behind a replacement before the general election campaign intensifies. The outcome could have significant implications for control of the Senate, where Republicans are seeking to maintain and expand their majority while Democrats hope to reclaim ground in competitive states.

Let’s pray for truth, justice, and integrity throughout the electoral process. Allegations of serious wrongdoing deserve to be handled fairly and transparently, while voters deserve candidates of character who are committed to serving the public faithfully. Regardless of party, let’s pray that God would raise up leaders who pursue righteousness and govern with wisdom.

Share your prayers for Maine as its Senate race continues below.

(Excerpt from Fox News.
