Now the federal government is taking direct aim at that problem, and a Hollywood actor is helping make the case for change.

Get involved in state-level prayer with IFA.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced new actions this week targeting Lyme disease, alpha-gal syndrome, and other tick-borne conditions. Actor Dennis Quaid joined the announcement as a patient advocate, putting a familiar face on an issue that affects hundreds of thousands of Americans every year.

From Breitbart:

Kennedy laid out the announcement in a video posted to X, framing the effort as a push to speed diagnosis and expand treatment for patients who spend years searching for answers.

“Millions of Americans need faster diagnoses, better care, and real answers,” Kennedy wrote in the post.

The secretary said too many patients are misdiagnosed or go untreated and pointed to nearly half a million Americans diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease each year. He said HHS is investing millions in innovation to build AI-powered tools that improve care, enable earlier diagnosis, and accelerate research.

Quaid shared a personal reason for his involvement. His late friend, singer and actor Kris Kristofferson, spent years living with an Alzheimer’s diagnosis that turned out to be wrong. Doctors finally identified Lyme disease as the real cause in 2016, and Kristofferson’s symptoms improved once he received the right treatment. The story puts a human face on what Kennedy called a systemic failure in diagnosis and care.

The new push builds on a package Kennedy rolled out in May at the New Hampshire State House. That announcement included a multimillion-dollar CDC tick-control pilot program, up to $2.5 million in innovation challenges through the LymeX initiative, and a public-private partnership to help patients find experienced doctors by zip code at hhs.gov/lyme. The department set a goal of cutting Lyme cases 25 percent by 2035 compared to 2022 levels. HHS said it has already helped bring two improved FDA-cleared Lyme diagnostics to market through its work with the LymeX community.

Kennedy also urged patients to submit their treatment histories through Cure ID, a free app from the FDA and NIH that collects real-world treatment data. Between 10 and 20 percent of patients who are treated for Lyme disease continue to experience symptoms for years after treatment, according to the Washington Examiner.

God made our bodies with remarkable complexity, and when illness goes undiagnosed for years, real people pay the price in pain, confusion, and loss. Scripture reminds us that God is close to those who suffer (Psalm 34:18), and that government bears a responsibility to pursue justice and care for the vulnerable (Romans 13:4). Christians can give thanks when leaders take practical steps to reduce suffering, and pray that this effort leads to real results for the millions still searching for answers.

How are you praying about this issue?
