The Department of Education says the changes would refocus accreditation on educational quality, student outcomes, and affordability rather than diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

This content is supported by your donations.
Give today.

From The Federalist:

“At a time when Americans have lost trust in higher education, the Trump Administration’s proposed changes to the accreditation system are intended to reorient our quality assurance framework so that accreditors prioritize student outcomes rather than bureaucratic processes or the promotion of divisive and unlawful ideological agendas,” Under Secretary of Education Nicholas Kent said in a Wednesday press release.

…

The proposed rule comes after Trump signed an executive order in April 2025 directing the reformation of the accreditation system. The order noted the accreditation groups’ entrenchment in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) ideology, and the ever-increasing costs of going to college.

…

Wednesday’s proposed rule will make it easier for the secretary of education to recognize new accreditors and diminish the power of private trade associations to control accreditors. According to the Department of Education, the rule will also “promote academic freedom, intellectual diversity, and research integrity.”

Accreditation may seem like an obscure part of higher education, but accrediting organizations wield enormous influence. Colleges generally need recognition from federally approved accreditors for their students to access federal financial aid. President Donald Trump’s April 2025 executive order noted that more than $100 billion in federal student loans and Pell Grants are distributed each year, giving accreditation decisions significant financial consequences for institutions and students.

The administration argues that this leverage has allowed some accreditors to move beyond evaluating educational quality and instead pressure institutions to adopt ideological policies. Trump’s executive order specifically criticized accreditation standards incorporating DEI considerations, directing the Department of Education to investigate and take appropriate action against accreditors engaging in unlawful discrimination.

The issue extends into professional education as well. Accreditation requirements can shape how future doctors, lawyers, and other professionals are trained. Critics have accused medical and law school accreditors of promoting racial preferences, DEI programs, and other ideological standards that have little to do with whether students are prepared to perform their professions competently.

The new proposal seeks to introduce greater competition into this system by simplifying the process through which new accrediting organizations can receive federal recognition. The Department of Education also says its reforms would strengthen academic freedom and intellectual diversity while reconnecting higher education with workforce needs and increasing accountability for educational outcomes.

For intercessors, these reforms offer an opportunity to pray about the purpose of education itself. Colleges and universities have tremendous influence over the beliefs and values of future generations, while professional schools prepare people who will eventually exercise significant authority throughout American society. Let’s pray that educational institutions pursue truth rather than ideology, that students are evaluated according to merit, and that reforms restore accountability and genuine intellectual freedom to American higher education.

Share your prayers and scriptures for America’s colleges, universities, and students in the comments.

(Excerpt from The Federalist.
