The organization publicly disclosed the news amid intensifying talk about the congresswoman as a potential 2028 presidential candidate, a conversation that has already made headlines and drawn attention from within the party\u2019s left flank.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cDemocratic Socialists of America confirms Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a member in good standing of our organization, having recently rejoined in August 2026,\u201d DSA said. \u201cPreviously, the representative joined DSA in 2018 with a one-year membership, which DSA\u2019s national leadership recently noticed had lapsed, in 2019. She has since renewed her membership as of this month.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
Ocasio-Cortez originally joined DSA in 2018, the same year she defeated 10-term incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley in the Democrat primary for New York\u2019s 14th Congressional District. Although her original membership lasted one year before lapsing in 2019, DSA continued to refer to Ocasio-Cortez as a \u201cmember\u201d on multiple occasions during the following seven years, according to NOTUS.\n<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile it is atypical for DSA to address the membership status of individuals, ongoing discussions about the 2028 presidential campaign have prompted this release,\u201d DSA said.<\/p>\n
The disclosure comes on the heels of a primary season that saw DSA-affiliated and DSA-endorsed candidates notch several victories, including against incumbent Democrats. Darializa Avila Chevalier in New York and Melat Kiros in Colorado, both DSA-endorsed, won their Democrat primaries this year, while other candidates linked to the organization also experienced electoral success, according to NOTUS. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s DSA-backed victory last fall raised the group\u2019s national profile, though he sought during his campaign to distinguish parts of his platform from the organization\u2019s national policy positions.\n<\/p>\n
Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s relationship with DSA has not always been politically smooth. DSA withdrew its endorsement of her 2024 House campaign before conditionally reinstating it, pointing to her vote for a resolution that equated the \u201cdenial of Israel\u2019s right to exist\u201d with a form of antisemitism. Earlier this year, she appeared at a private DSA meeting where she said she would not authorize any military aid to Israel. \u201cThe Israeli government should be able to finance their own weapons if they seek to arm themselves,\u201d she said, according to an April report from City & State New York.\n<\/p>\n
Ocasio-Cortez has been actively defending her socialist convictions on the national stage. Earlier this month she said on ABC\u2019s This Week that Democratic Socialists are \u201cfundamentally pro-democracy,\u201d \u201cbelieve in the ballot box,\u201d and believe in \u201crespecting the outcomes of elections,\u201d comparing the New York City chapter to \u201cyour local union chapter.\u201d In May, she told Democrat strategist David Axelrod that her ambitions go beyond the presidency: \u201cmy ambition is way bigger than that. My ambition is to change this country.\u201d She added that \u201cPresidents come and go,\u201d but described priorities such as \u201csingle payer healthcare,\u201d \u201ca living wage,\u201d \u201cworker\u2019s rights,\u201d and \u201cwomen\u2019s rights\u201d as \u201cforever.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Isaiah 5:20 issues a woe to those who \u201ccall evil good and good evil.\u201d The rise of a political movement that explicitly rejects Israel\u2019s right to exist, pursues policies hostile to the sanctity of life and the family, and seeks to reshape the economy on socialist lines should concern every believer. This is not merely a matter of partisan politics; it is a question of which values will govern the nation. Let us pray for justice and righteousness to prevail in America, for believers to be vigilant and engaged in the public square, and for those who hold positions of influence to be convicted of the truth and turn toward the God who established the boundaries of good and evil.\n<\/p>\n
