\u201cThe Magic Tablet\u201d is part of a broader national campaign led by the department to combat the harms of excessive screen use among children, an effort that pairs storytelling with policy as officials work to help families reclaim healthier, more connected childhoods.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Magic Tablet reminds us of something simple and powerful: Children do not need a device to discover a new world. They need imagination,\u201d Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. writes in the book\u2019s introduction.\n<\/p>\n
\u201cMore than 40 percent of school-aged children and adolescents have at least one chronic health condition,\u201d Kennedy adds. \u201cScreens now surround children from their earliest days and have become a profound driver of this decline. Many children spend more time looking at screens than sleeping, exercising, playing outside, or talking face-to-face with family and friends. Too many of our kids are growing up isolated and caught in unhealthy relationships with technology. But childhood does not have to look this way.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is not only about what we ask young people to put down,\u201d Haridopolos writes. \u201cIt is also about what we encourage them to pick up, and what they might discover when they do.\u201d<\/p>\n
The book tells the story of a little girl named Eleanor, who discovers a world of wonder when she spends a day using her imagination after her parents won\u2019t let her have a tablet. Young readers follow Eleanor through a day filled with drawing with her brother, spending time with friends at a playground, and enjoying a healthy family dinner, all without screens. The book is dedicated to the children of America and to the adults who have the privilege of guiding their childhood and watching them grow.\n<\/p>\n
The department is publishing the book as part of its Live Real Life campaign, an initiative aimed at giving kids a healthier childhood by decreasing harmful screen use. On Tuesday, the department will host a Live Real Life Symposium, bringing together leaders in medicine, technology, and education to discuss how to help kids thrive offline. Speakers will include Kennedy, Haridopolos, and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz. The department said the symposium will convene healthcare leaders, researchers, advocates, and technology companies to focus on screen-related harms and practical solutions, building on the Office of the Surgeon General\u2019s advisory outlining the health and developmental concerns tied to social media and technology use in children and adolescents.\n<\/p>\n
Dr. Stephanie Haridopolos, director of National Health Communication for the Office of the Surgeon General, wrote in the book\u2019s foreword that childhood should always be full of magic, and that helping kids develop a healthy relationship with technology is about more than restriction. It is also about what children discover when they set screens aside and rediscover the world around them.\n<\/p>\n
For families of faith, the campaign echoes a truth many parents already hold close: children flourish when they are given room to imagine, create, and connect with those around them. Scripture reminds us to train up a child in the way he should go (Proverbs 22:6), a calling that includes shaping the habits and environments in which children grow. In a culture saturated with screens, choosing to protect a child\u2019s imagination and relationships can be an act of faithful stewardship.\n<\/p>\n
